That looks like a holset with a new hot side?

But you have both.....
I have a soft spot for a fat a$$. Plus I already have the 5 inch lips on the way for a nice start on a widebody upgrade. I have fikse fm10 so It's not like I need new wheels, Just 5 insh lips and move the rears to the front and get new tires for the wide new rears. Then add flares and front rear bumpers or extensions. If I can stay on the safe side of the slope.

Yep, both. Bought the Carrera 3.0 ten years ago. People back in Denmark thought I was nuts spending that kind of money in my age on a vehicle that old. But, now I got it won't ever sell it. Same goes for the 930.

You are right on the turbo. Can't resist the urge to learn more about this turbo business, so bought something to play around with.

Edit: I understand the urge. That is probably why I bought both

Here's that Holset's bigger brother:

The turbine inlets aren't always that smooth or irregularly shaped, this one had both housings Extrude-Honed.

On many of these turbine housings, you can machine off the v-band entirely, then mill & tap it for the M10x1.5mm studs.

Guess what? No boost.
I'll elaborate, I rebuilt the turbo again(holset hx35) for the second time and repealed it back up, reinstalled it, and after worming it up I drove it slowly at first and then a little throttle and nothing but a wiring sound. Sounded like a turbo building boost from other turbo cars I've heard in the past but it didn't build boost. More like it was struggling to spin.
The turbo spun before I reinstalled it. And the play wasn't much to speak of either. So I'm stumped. I guess the shaft could be buggered and not smooth enough? That's what it looked like while apart but I don't know. I'm done buying parts for a turbo I really don't want though. Who wants this crappy turbo? I'll take a hundo.
I just want my light weight gt30r. I'm getting another chra for mine. Sucks too cause I got some wider lips for the fikse wheels so I could start the wide body conversion. Guess that will wait till the SLB can drive again.

The shaft journals weren't smooth? They have to be smooth as a baby's behind! If it was whistling, sounds like it was working. Must be a massive boost leak.

Dammit Quattro!

Not what I was hoping for.

If you are serious, I'll take it for a hundred just it try an figure out what is wrong, but let it settle and think it over.

As you know you're not the only one not doing the projects they (I) thought I'd do. I have a whole bunch of stuff lined up I was gonna reveal, however, an old ford Taurus changed those plans real quick.

Many, many, many people have success with Holsets around the world including myself.

Something simply is wrong.

I was a little pissed when I posted. I'm a patient person usually. I still may remove and disassemble again but I dont want to. I want to drive and enjoy. I think maybe the shaft is a little gunked up. Not sure why I didn't pay more attention to that. I was distracted with a couple other things in the garage. My wife was sanding and painting a bed and I had kids in and out of the garage fridge right behind my vise where I was working on the turbo. I remember thinking about the shaft after I installed the turbo. A little late.
There is no leak. The sound wasn't a healthy wine, more a sound of a turbo struggling against exhaust pressure.
Car ran fine otherwise. I'm sure it's spinning, just properly.

Got three kids myself...

Can you put the compressor and shaft on a glass table to see if it is crooked?

You'll get there and once this is done, you have learned a ton.

Happy New Years.

Quattro-
hmmmm weird but I think I know the exact sound you are talking about. On my old Audi ur-quattro I had a K24 rebuilt (by a pro) - 6 months later once the car (oil?) would warm up it would make a loud whishing sound and would not build boost. Weird. Never did figure it out. Pulled the 10V motor and installed a 20v LOL.

Hope you figure it out without too much trouble.

Have you tried rolling it on a glass table? You might be able to see even a slight bend.

I did that on a granite slab. It looked good to me. I'm tired of r&ring this thing. I have other things to do. I'm not taking it apart again. I'm selling. Who wants it?

So it's still not spooling? Same sound? How does it spin when not on car?

I just got my car back from a friends while we were waiting in our house to finish and got to drive it nearly 2 hours. The HX40 was an animal and really responsive.

Are you 100% sure it's the turbo? Not doubting you, but if nothing looked out of place but it doesn't make boost, seems something else is out of whack. Is the WG staying closed at idle/no boost as it should? Maybe it's stuck open?

I'm taking the wg apart today. That's way easier and next on the list.

There is no reason this turbo should be bad. It's in fine shape and worked for a 1/2 hour once then nothing. I'll take that wg apart.
But seems if it's stuck open the engine should be louder.
