manual boost controller installation
i've read some threads on this but i'm still confused on how to hook it up. which line on the wastegate do i tee into for the hose that goes into the manual boost controller and where do i connect the outgoing hose? the port on top of the waste gate is just vented to atmosphere. does the hose coming out of the boost controller get connect to the vent hose on the wastegate and the hose that goes into the boost controller get tee'd into the hose that goes from the bottom port on wastegate to the intercooler? anything tha t can clear this up will be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance, mick

Your question sentence that starts with "does" is correct. The answer to it yes :)
The vent line on top of the wastegate is no longer going to be vented to atmospheric pressure after you hook up the regulator correctly. The regulator will be feeding the top fitting and top side of the internal diaphram a lower adjustable portion of the entire boost pressure from the intercooler end tank that is currently and will still be going to the bottom fitting on the wastegate. When it's installed the regulator makes it so you can adjust the pressure differential between the bottom and top side of the rubber spring loaded diaphram inside the wastegate. If the regulator knob is accidentally turned clockwise all the way the same amount of boost air pressure would be going to the bottom and top sides of the diaphram equalizing the pressure differential and the wastegate would never open... Car would accelerate really fast for a moment and then kapow.. woop$. |
I have a Hallman manual boost controller and it only hooks up to the side port leaving the top vent open so there appear to be differences in how some are plumbed.

can anybody supply a diagram? i'm using an original 935 style boost controller if that matters. i was thinking the outlet side of the boost controller would just vent off excess pressure to atmosphere thereby limiting the pressure going to the waste gate which would in turn supply less pressure to push against spring. turn knob clockwise thereby choking off vent and supply more pressure to waste gate to push harder against spring which open waste gate more. am i totally off base here????

You should be able to find the complete manual for Turbosmart devices on their website. I must have copied this from there a couple of years ago when I installed one on my 930. There may be different types of controller, but for simple inline valves, the principle should be the same regardless of which brand you are using.
I simply spliced my valve into the hose that takes the boost pressure signal to the waste gate (from intercooler on my car). http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1386197654.jpg |
There's a number of different types of boost controllers and boost regulators out there. If you are lucky to have the nowadays impossible to find one that was used by Porsche in the 935 it is an air pressure regulator type that controls the differential pressure between the top and bottom ports in the wastegate.

JF, i do indeed have a regulator off a 935. the bottom port from my wastegate goes to my intercooler. the top port vents to the atmosphere. there must be a third port that goes from turbocarger to wastegate. is this the one i tee into with the hose going into regulator. this regulator has an arrow pointing in flow direction. i don't know why i'm finding this complicated. i just want to get it right. please pardon my ignorance.

That generic diagram shows a pressure line from the compressor housing on a turbo going to the input side of the air pressure regulator. That is boost pressure from the compressor housing and the air pressure there is the same as air pressure in the pressure line coming off the inlet side end tank of your intercooler. The 911 turbo takes it from the inlet side end tank of the the intercooler.
The way it works is simple for me to understand. I know how an air pressure regulator works and I can't explain how to hook up an air presure regulator type boost controller any better than this diagram. The 935 boost controller is an air pressure regulator... a very nice working and nice looking fancy old German one that is a valuable collector item these days. This is the inexpensive generic one I have but it works the same way as your 935 boost controller and it makes no difference what turbocharged car you install and use it on. |
so can i just tee into the hose from waste gate to intercooler for the inlet side of regulator and connect outlet side of regulator to upper vent port of waste gate?

Exactly, and start out with the knob turned all the way counter clockwise and turn it clockwise to increase boost.

what would happen if i hooked the boost controller up like in billjams diagram? both your way and that way make sense. are they both correct? is there any benefit or downside to hooking it up either way?
