VIN date vs. wheel date question

So when I yanked my Fuchs (sounds kinkier than it should?) the other day, I did something I'd never bothered to do before...

...took a peeksee @ ze datestamp.

My 930's VIN'd as a 2/87 build.

My Fuchs are stamped 7/87.

So, I'm Assuming I've got a later run '87 then? Like real late I'd think... most mfg's switch over to the new MY~ August... though... back in '87 that may not be the case as much as it stands in recent decades?

Just querious, really. My car's younger than I'd thought I guess. I'd kinda thunk it was an earlier car as I had the ET phone home 3rd brakelight (different than 3rd input, and emphasis on HAD as that fukker'z loooooong gooooooooone), vs. the in-glass/headliner unit.

For it to have 7/87 wheels, the in-service-date would conceivably / likely be more like Aug-Dec.

Yeah, I know... I'm a dork

More likely the wheels were replaced at some point (damage, etc) after the car was new. Or perhaps the original owner had two and swapped wheels for some reason. Or...

Agree...

You can also check the date stamp on your spare.

Can anybody else chime in on this? I just checked and mine also are what seem a later date than the build. My wheels are stamped 1078 and the car was built 6/78. Is it possible the first 2 numbers are the WEEK? That may also make sense for the OP and make his wheels a Feb date.... I know it's a reach, but......

From what I understand in the 1970s the Fuchs date code format was month followed by two digit year. Sometime in the late 1970s Fuchs switched to a week followed by two digit year, but I don't know when (though it was at least by 1979).

Does anyone know exact switchover? I think they did this just to confuse us

It's simple. Your Fuchs are from the future. Porsche did this with a lot of cars. When the factory would run out of Fuchs wheels, they would time-jump and get some from the future. This posed some serious long-term issues however, as the Fuchs now were vacant in said future, when they should have been there. Things got hairy and Porsche finally decided to stop poaching from future inventory.

This sounds like something that belongs in the "dedicated 930 forum."

I believe this discussion belongs on the "Stock 930" forum

Dammittt Infra, I didn't see your response before posting, and I thought I was hilarious.

Yeah, don't quit your day job there, Jesper.

Can't go check the backs of my wheels because they're on loan to someone else. "Yeah, hey, I know it's night time and all, but would you mind going down to your car and pulling off the wheels to take a look at the date stamp on the backs? Give me a ring back when you're done, K? There's a Pelican thread waiting on your response."
