Tailight Lens - Needs vs Wants

So the first 930 project has not gone completely according to plan. Not wholly unexpected, a bummer none the less.

So my car is apparantly sporting the Bosch euro amber lenses. At least it was:

IMG_5513.jpg by thecrashingdoor, on Flickr

The first one I removed came off in two pieces. While this quickly told me where my source of moisture was coming from I cannot with good conscience just glue it or put a broken part back on. I also noticed some rust on the reflector in housing.

The last issue is the housing screw closest to the tail panel just spins. Upon further inspection it is just turning inside the clip. Its hard to tell but is there an actual nut on the back? It would sorta appear so but its hard to tell. What say ye?

The next question is what is probably largely of individual taste, do I replace with another Bosch euro lens or go with the a full new Bosch set of red lenses? Opinions?

I will sand and clean up the rusty reflector (Nightshades actually makes a decent reflector paint) then once I can get the housing off replace the seal.

Anyone run uprated bulbs? I did this once back in the day but ended up melting stuff (doh).

Thanks folks.

Clip is still there, the screw however just turns in it.

Does anyone make LED's for the tail lights? I would want to keep the same "color", but have brighter lights.

LED's are available. 1156 for markers and reverse, and 1157 for the stop lights and blinkers. You'll also need a BA9s (four of them) for the side indicators front and rear . Blinkers will become problematic without a load resistor or changing the flasher out. You can change to this flasher and you'll be able to run LED's and not have any issues with the blinkers: CF13GL-02 LED Bulb Electronic Flasher | Flashers & Load Resistors | Car Bulb Installation Supplies | LED Car Bulbs | Super Bright LEDs

The brake lights and markers aren't a problem since they're 1156's.

As for the tail lenses; it's purely a matter of taste for you. I would suggest taking a look at Sierra Madre Collection. They offer very nice quality reproduction tail light assemblies at a fraction of the cost. I took my original reds off and installed a set of reds from Sierra Madre so I could preserve my original lenses. They have the US, Euro and Italian versions, depending on your taste.

Sierra Madre Collection: 911 / 356 Porsche Parts | Porsche, Wurth and Fuchs Wheels | Sierra Madre Collection

As for the assemblies, they also have a replacement set available if you don't want to mess with cleaning up your tail lights now.

Best of luck!

Chris.

Yep, the reviews seem to say they are not as good quality wise as the originals (re:the 147.00 "Bosch" lenses). In the grand scheme of things if they are in piece they are better quality than what I have currently.

Looks like I am going to go back to the US red lens and keep my eyes open for a original amber Bosch lens so I will have both.

Amazon.com screwed up and sent me 32 led bulbs (instead of 2) to replace the 1156's in the Audi so I may toss a couple in to see how they work.

To me, criminally indistinguishable red indicators are ghastly. Tail lights need contrast to look proper (again, IMO). All red just looks washed out bled together boring. The amber's compliment the paint too, and give it a defining / appropriately proppah Euro look.

I couldn't pitch my red corners fast enough. Amber's just look right. But hey, we all gots opinions right?

Not sure what the reviews mean about the Pelican unit's quality? Mine seem like... tail lights 8-). Never noticed anything different or odd about them, they're just fine.

Agreed, mostly, I think its personal preference. Im going the cheap route (repros) on the US lens. If I hate them at least I wont be 300 bucks invested.

My main concern with going with Pelicans "Bosch" (Bosch stamped replacements are NLA) replacement euro lens is that the amber color wont match the other factory lens.

Oh well, its not a pressing need, the broken lens just makes my OCD flare up. Must....have....perfection....symmetry....

Paul, I'm beginning to think that you and I are polar opposites regarding the "look" of various components for these cars as I think the euro lenses look really lame compared to the red US ones. To me, the red lenses look much more uniform next to the red reflector (not boring or washed out in the least). But, I suppose you're still an OK dude regardless of your f*cked up tastes!

Er um uh - yeah... because having red lenses as one signals and brakes @ the same time is effective or safe. Not.

But yes beyond ^that^... reference the whole opinions / azzholez concept, sure 8-)...

Oh, and Ronaldo... you're from Texas. 'Nuff said...

(Ikeeeed!)

Feel good that you're contrarian to me, if you were like me even I'd feel sorry for you.

Shannon, ah... you're only seeking to replace one and yer concerned w/ the matchability with the Pelican part vs. your OE one. Dunno there, I bought a pair so the issue was moot.

Even if it was a perfect color match from the factory, you would have one 25 yr old faded one and one brand new one, so the only way to match it is to replace both.

I agree with you Paul. Amber turn signal lenses make it much easier to see both turn and brake lights. Last thing I want is to be hit from behind because they didnt notice the brake light because my turn signal was on.

This is on my list of stuff to do this winter.

Ambers don't look right on GP Weiss, but I can see how it might look good on Guards...

Volt - Was that your drivers side? I think I have a used Bosch amber in my garage... And it's probably in 25 year old shape...

edit: sorry, I just took a closer look, that's your pass side, mine is a driver side lens...

I've had two sets of the Pelican euro lenses and the quality is good. What people talk about is the color is different than the Bosch euro lenses. The Pelican lenses are more opaque and a little orangey. They are priced right as I got a pair for what one Bosch would cost.

I have nothing against Pelican - but have you checked out Sierra Madre? Very nice quality.

I have a set of the US and the Euro. The Euro versions from them are more yellow than amber. I can post a picture for you tonight. I bought a set of Euro versions and ended up buying the US versions instead as I think they look nicer against my particular car's color.
