front / side bumper support thingy Q

So I finnnnally installed my RF corner oil cooler air scoop tonight...:

...which poses the following question to youses.

WTF is this ginormous block of aluminum (yes I'm aware of the overspray everywhere - PO had the front bumper redone) that I had to remove in order to remove the what should have otherwise been easy to remove RF US corner indicator (ended up being a PITA - valance had to come off, good thing that was on the menu anyway)???:

There isn't a sister to it on the LF side, which I found odd.

It only attaches to the inner bumper, not anywhere to the body nor spoiler. Looks like maybe US side impact protection additive maybe?

But then again... why not also on LF???

Confuzed.

Needless to say, it likely ain't goin back on... Superleggera! 8-)

Unrelated, but whilst I was in thar Q...

Is the OE oil cooler fan in the RF corner there supposed to turn with ease? Mine isn't graunchy or anything, but damn does it pose a surprising amount of resistance to spin. Normal? I'd think not, hence the Q...

Paulito, The PET refers to that as "support for bumper" and shows that there is only one which is on the right hand side (just like you found on your car). Maybe the plate is there to help keep the oil cooler from getting punctured in a front end collision?

I just went out and checked the oil cooler fan movement on my car and it moves by hand with no real resistance at all.

Hey Ronmeister...

Thanks not only for the PET lookup but also for the 1a.m. (yer time) fan spin!

Hadn't thunk about the oil cooler protection (thinking isn't me strongsuit)... good point, and a pointless one @ that. How much friggin protection is that really affording when getting carunched by 1.5-2ton??? STOOPID.

Another senseless observation...

...WTF is up w/ Porsche King of Engineering Design Light Weight and All Things Awesome opting to add nineteen frickin feet of fookin thread to the studs on the back of things like the bumper accordians and corner indicators. With locknutz no less. Yeah... GOOD TIMES with a wrench turning them 1/64-turn at a time. Awesssssssssome. Car could prolly weigh an entire 2lbs less w/o things as such, and be a whole $1.50 cheaper.

Hmmmm, on the oil cooler fan. That sucks. For me. Prolly seals the deal on my keep-or-sell conundrum regarding that cooler and/or a front-mount. Classifieds here I come, which then means that scoop is FS as well d'oh.

Will have to pull the cooler and find the fan wires to apply 12v and see WTF the dilly-o is....

That air scoop really does nothing Paul, you know that. Go with the front valance cooler in series with the fender one and you're set, don't even need the fan anymore... Is that red/silver corrugated hose brakes cooling?

The oil cooler fan probably comes apart like the rest of the fan motors in the car and then you can clean it with brake clean and compressed air and then oil the armature shaft bushings so it spins easily again.

The rest you know now... the cast aluminum thing is low to medium speed right front crash protection for the oil cooler so the car can still be driven if possible and that plastic air scoop is really ugly so ditching it is a good thing.

Hey Miguel-

I think the scoop will definitely help - not the end-all-be-all solution certainly for dedicated track use, but it's capturing / directing airflow dead-onto the fan & cooler that wasn't (at all) being captured before. Can't see how it "does nothing"?

Yeah, I know 2 coolers in series is 'best'... but for my usage and budget, either the scoop to the OE cooler or just the front-mount should do just fine I'd think. And I like the look of the scoop I think it's pretty cool 8-).

Yes, those hoses are my ghettofab brake ducts. I've still got to fab or source rotor hats to properly funnel the air @ that end. Roland emailed me his .pdf file off the CAD specs for the inner rotor block-off plates, and I'll likely try to knock out a set like Toby masterfully did on his.

I've got some random car dash vent ducts I'm going to finagle @ the valance end on my dp style unit. It'll be a work in process as I get time / $$$ to address it all.
