Stone Guards - Yes / No??

I was detailing my car today and I took my shark-fin stone guards off today because they were looking pretty ashy and dry. I am planning to replace them.

I finished up my detail with them off and was looking at the car without them.

What are y'all's thoughts on leaving them off? - I was originally thinking about leaving them off, but looking at my car without them - it looks somewhat naked and something is missing. In fact, it kind of looks to me like it's hiding the widebody lines without them.

Only decent picture I could grab was in my garage because it's already getting dark outside

Just curious to hear what others think?

Chris.

My opinion? If your going to remove them, lower that car! If you put them back on you'r fine, but I'd still lower it some.
Car looks great either way.

You'd be amazed how many chips the guards deflect. I also like the look, I say replace them.

Same as infraredcalvin.

I have none on mine and it's impressive the ammount of stone chips on the front of the rear fenders.

Personally, i prefer the look without them, but I'm going to put on some new ones.

The choice is all yours

One could just clear-bra that area if you wanted to go without and still protect the paint.

I am leaning on putting them back on I think. - Are there magnetic versions available? I've only seen them available for narrow body cars.

Chris.

I think a 930 looks "wrong" without the shark fins - they go perfectly with all of the other black trim/detailing, and scream 70s & 80s.

+1 naked
+1 something is missing
+1 like it's hiding the widebody lines without them

I know some early 3.0's did not have them
I know, thru the '70's at least, they could be left off
But, it ain't no damn 930 without dem Shark Fins!

I like them on. It seems to hide the lines of the rear without them. Plus the protection factor.

They so belong! It's all in the aesthetic details, the Germans, especially Porsche Design haus have a great eye for these subtle details.

I think off is more 965ish, more jellybean, bulbous

I think on is... everything everyone else said.

Just 'right'.

And amen on the stone protection...

While I really dig black 930s, it's one complaint I have... hides all the sexaaay black contrasting trimbits, esp the 'fins!

Cool to finally see another angle of your car / wheels - damn it's hot. And that's gotta be "one of" your ///M3's thar in my ultrafave blue. All time favorite color.

A friend and fellow Pelican has a 930 without the shark fins. The fenders are absolutely sandblasted. If you're not keen on the look of the shark fins, you're NOT going to like what it looks like without them. Go clear if you have to.

I ordered a new set from Pelican. I think everyone is right; it just looks "off" without them. I've seen a silver 930 without the shark fins and it looked really sharp. My car - not so much.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

And yeah... I know I need to lower it. It's on my list of things to do!

Chris.

Years ago I had my 88 911Turbo repainted. I replaced all the lenses, some rubber and the stone guards. It is unbelievable how nice and crisp new stone guards look! Wise move before the quarters get beat up.

Yep! I have a huge passion for the old E36 M3. I remember when the coupe came out in 95. I wanted one so bad but I was in the Army at the time and couldn't afford one. Fast forward 15 years and I was finally able to get them. Phenomenally inexpensive to own and maintain, but so much joy to drive.

This is my Estoril Blue 98 sedan. It has some interesting mods on it. Makes about 400whp and has a 6spd from an E46 M3:

And this is my Cosmos black 96 coupe. It is stock but has the Modena interior option:

Kind regards,

Chris.

Wow thank you so much for the link. He offers some really nice graphics. I have to say - the "turbo" side graphic for the 930 looks killer! So does the hood graphics in matte black. Interesting!
