msd 6al on a 1983 euro 930

trying to run an msd unit using the pelican tech article as a guide(which seemed pretty straightforward), but the fact that my 930 is a euro car seems to be making the task difficult. currently getting no spark. with ign key in the on position, I am getting juice to the msd box, but no juice to the msd coil---I assume there should be juice to the coil w the ign key in the on position(put a test light on it and have nothing. anyone wired one of these up on a euro car ? is there a wiring difference ? would greatly appreciate any help in sorting out this matter. thanks, john 502-507-3112

Installed a MSD 6530 6AL-2 on my 1981 930 without issues. No tach adapter required. Added connectors to wires off MSD box and plugged into 6 pin adapter per attached drawing.

Ive got problems on my Euro also,

heres a picture ive been putting together to make it work,

currently i have no tach though

I think with the Euro you cant use the White wire but i might be wrong,

I think to start you only need 3 wires connected to get spark,

heavy red to pos
heavy black to neg
light Red to switched power,

note the notes i made on it,
Still fumbling through it i have good spark and driveability but no Tacho,
My spark and driving i think only comes from the main 3 but i could be wrong, but maybe it will give you some ideas or something to try, if you work it out please post,
Second pic shows using existing plug for tachoutput but still no tach,

if you connect the dist to the MSD as MSD says, the signal is upside down and it advances the timing so much it may not run. mine did but the RPM was very hi and it sounded very bad.

connect the violet to the braid on the dist wire and the green to the center conductor on the dist.

i will have to look at the pelican tech artilce.

Same here when i first installed an MSD 6al. Reversed the polarity of the wires mentioned above and all was back to normal and worked good.

that tech article was very confusing. they said the ?red wire to the coil?

no, no

the thick red and black go to the battery. (i connected my thick red wire to the starter).

the orange and black go the coil.

the other red wire is switched power that goes to the connector to the old CD unit.

violet goes to the braid on th dist wire and the green goes to the center conductor.

you can mount it on the right side above the relay panel, you just have to lay down some relays.

you can also get a connector that will mate to the original connector so that you dont have to cut wires, a big thing with me.

question:

what did ^you^ (name???) mean by this?:

"violet goes to the braid on the dist wire and the green goes to the center conductor."

everything else seems pretty easy but this one confused me (not hard)...

thanks in advance (boooo, baaaaaaaad pun!!!) 8-)

It's a coaxial wire like a microphone or guitar cord and the outer sheild is what he meant by braid.

I ditched the old 6 pin plug and all the worn out spade terminals and installed a terminal strip on the back of the relay panel and connected everything together including the MSD there. It's much better and neater.

thanks Jim

so... I cut the OE wire and splice the MSD to that then?

would love a pic of your terminal strip concoction sometime!

I've moved some wires on it, neatened it up a little and leveled the relay up on top since I snapped this one.
The relay on top is for my AC condensor fans. I have a 10" fan on the halfbay tail condensor and another 10" one on the Zim's AC condensor I put in the left rear wheel well.

robby, you have the 8 pin setup. i have seen it but do not remmeber the pin outs to really help. also what you have described is a bit confusing.
these are really nice cars. you should clean up the wiring at the dist and make it look more factory.

here is my final install. i got a connector to mate with the factory wiring harness. it is the clear one at the top of the MSD.

once installed did it make any difference? I installed a unit on my old 'vette and the "butt dyno" showed no real gains

no gains in performance.
i put the MSD in so i could remove the speed relay/rev limiter to remove the last of the electronics to make it more reliable. the MSD gave me the rev limiter back. whats neat about the new ones is the rev limiter can be dialed in and when you turn the key to ON the tach needle shows you where the rev limit is set to. also, that led flashes when it gets a signal from the dist, but no power gains.

i since re-routed the cable to the MSD andn it is not going thru the relay panel.

i still carry th ebosch unit. if the MSD should fail i can unplug the MSD and plug the bosch unit back in.

T77911s, Nice and neat. You really know your electrical stuff don't you. Would you be able to recall the part number / source for this connector? I think MSD is next on my list as an insurance policy for my 28yesr old factory setup, but I hate wiring. I never have the right good terminal / connectors to do the job to my standards.

While we are on this, are there any solutions for replacing the green distributor wire? I bought one from pelican but it's just a pigtail. My car does not have the 6" pigtail connector deal; my wire is uninterrupted from the distributor plug to where it disappears into the harness. Addressing this now brown green wire would be mandatory during the MSD job.

ARGH

so I got the Serial to USB adapter (for a cool $26freakinbux - joy)...

but

MSD ports only highlight COM3, the rest are grey and unselectable

my laptop has 4-7

WTF

can someone please help me reconfigure either my laptop's ports or the MSD?

this is beyond frustrating...

I will have to find it.

the green wire goes into the harness but it goes to the connector, or it should.
the good thing about what i did is i wired the new connector with the connections swapped for the MSD so i can still plug in my bosch if i need to.

i was not real pleased with the connector i got. it is kind of hard to plug in. you have to be careful to line up the pins.

here is the connector i used. i would like a better one since it is hard to line up the pins, but it works.

Digikey part number is A27932-ND $1.14 for connector. Tabs are A107068CT-ND. this is at MOUSER

thanks for the connector / pins source, I've been asking here for months for that info to no avail - and for the heads up regarding pin alignment
