930 VIN vs. 934 VIN

Guys,

What is the difference between an early 930 VIN and a 934 VIN?

The VIN on my 76 930 is 93068xxxx. I think 934 vins may have been the same or they may have been 93067xxxx.

Does the 7 vs. 8 differentiate the 930s from the 934s?

In 1976 the serial numbers containing 930680xxxx were reserved for US production while those containing 930670xxxx were for all other markets and are commonly referred to as RoW (Rest of World) production cars. The 5th digit differentiation was necessary because US vehicles were required to meet DOT standards (safety and emissions) for importation.

When Porsche started building the 934 they included it in the 930670xxxx serial numbers. It would not have been possible to include it in the 93068xxxxx sequence as the 934 would have never met US DOT road use standards.

In 1976 Porsche built 30 934s, serial numbers 9306700151 to 9306700180.

934s and 935s were numbered similarly from 1977 to 1979 but Porsche did change to a 9 in the 5th position for the 1978 and 1979 935s.

The US and ROW seemed to have been built on the same line at the same time with the 934 in the first third of the 76 production run. It would have been interesting to be a worker then and the boss comes in and says "these will be 934 for the next couple of weeks".

Here are the Vin's which include the RSR 934 . So there were 30 built in 76 vin 0151 thru 0180 and in addition 10 more in 77 VIN range 0951 thru 0960 for a total production of 40 RSR 934's. Wonder if they know now what a great car they built."these will be 934 for the next couple of weeks"

"Fixed-head coupes --- with or without 930-style wheelarch extensions --- are fabricated on the same production lines" from page 169 of Porsche 911 by Chris Harvey.

Note the polished area at the back of the left rear quarter of the middle car. It shows the results of the hand work required to join the "930-style wheelarch extensions" to the former 911-style body and it clearly shows the two types were produced together on the same assembly line.
