I did that years ago with a CR aluminum 5 core rad. Thought it would be amazing and turned out it choked pretty bad. I guess they flow water well but air not so much. Or maybe I had the wrong rad design who knows. It was a ghetto thing to do in retrospect

The factory intercooler has integrated emissions pieces that do nothing but restrict power getting rid of that factory intercooler is one of the best things you could do. You will see around a 40hp and 29 ftlbs of torque increase just by adding the Fabspeed intercooler

Saying that the stock one must be best because it was designed by engineers in Stuttgart (maybe, if not outsourced to L&R) is giving factory engineers credit as perfect, which is nonsense. After all, these are the same guys that fitted the 930 with:
* a rubber-centered clutch disc, * CIS, even after the 1984 Carrera went EFI and the 1986 951 had EFI, and, something Robby is intimately familiar with * possibly the world's worst fuse and relay panel, bad enough to make a Jaguar or Fiat tech laugh and point It also assumes there have been zero advances in technology since the mid 1970s... 'nuff said. If these were so perfectly engineered, we'd all be driving stock 911 Turbos. |
I haven't driven and dyno tested a 911 Turbo yet that *doesn't* gain from a larger, more efficient intercooler.
Less back pressure, more efficient cooling -- all good. Trying to think of a client car where we did a back to back on just an intercooler, and when I remember and find it, I'll post it. I do recall a back-to-back on a friend's EFI 3.4L 930 running just 1.1bar on pump gas, going from a Garretson IC (which kicks @ss) to our full-width sheetmetal intercooler. Bigger intercoolers are free horsepower as all have indicated, but it is very difficult if not impossible to put a number to that increase. WAY too many variables such as heat soak, ambient temperature, other modifications, etc, etc. On a 70° day we would see ~15whp increase from our 1/2 bay init on a stock 255whp engine for one pull with no fan blowing on it. In the winter that number doubles. HUGE difference when the ambient temperature is low.

Your Andial intercooler is a nice lightweight Garretson that is a collector item. If you do upgrade to bigger and newer it's probably gonna be heavier but go for it if you decide to.

Thanks for the input everyone and I've decided a longneck intercooler will be my next upgrade. I'm dropping my car off at the shop today to have the GT35R installed so the slippery slope begins...
Chris, I like your black longneck intercooler package, but also found this example that looks pretty sweet! Do you make this intercooler in a 3/4 size where oil dipstick and AC compressor is more accessible? If so, would this intercooler create alot more fabrication on my car over your longneck intercooler package? The simplest answer is, a intercooler that is the biggest that can realistically fit the vehicle, highest flowing and most efficient in cooling charge temps, is the best one, regardless of all other components..... There are two main things that must be considered when choosing a intercooler. Flow cabability, and cooling efficiency. If you get a larger core the doesn't flow enough volume, it may drop the charge temps but then it defeats the purpose of having a larger flowing turbo as it could choke the airflow. If the core size is too small but flows enough air flow then it defeats the purpose of a n intercooler to begin with. The factory built a intercooler that works with the designed 260HP original engine using the small performing OE KKK turbo. Nothing wrong with it it was engineered to do what it was suppose to do with what it had. Add more fuel and more boost then quickly the turbo and intercooler is no longer efficient.
Also if the turbo is pushed beyond it's efficiency and is over spun. Then it is simply making more psi but no more volume of air and at the same time super heating the charge out of control. Even with the biggest intercooler in this scenario wouldn't help control charge temps at all. Once again the components have to be balanced to work with the performance level desired. Here is my choice, I picked the biggest core I could possibly fit which was the highest flowing and the the most efficient I could get At 1.5 bar I never see charge temps over 110 degrees Fahrenheit on full boost in 90 degree weather. If you don't have fabrication ability, Chris at Turbokraft has picked a good core that has been proven on a long list of excellent performing cars. He has done the homework for you. The bigger you make the intercooler the more original parts have to be removed to fit the giant brick. With the Turbokraft unit it still fits with everything and minimal modification needed so the car can be returned back to factory without too much fuss. Look at the last pic, you can see how much material I had to cut away from the factory deck lid to be able to close it. I also had to extend the turbo tail 3" to be able to clear the swing so it would close as well.
