Vintage "VW Greats" drag race with 930 #0014
It was just as the 3.0 930 Turbo was coming to our dealerships in 1976, I was featured in a "VW Greats" magazine article with a prototype 914 2.0 turbo type4.
The editor Jay Amestoy was heavy into all of the air cooled VW's, Porsches, Baja VW's, and motorsports. Jay later went on to head Mazda USA after his magazine career. The magazine went on to become today's "European Car". So after meeting with Jay, and staff photographer Steve Reyes at their Wilshire Bl. offices, we headed out to Irwindale Drag strip. This was the original 1/4 mile Irwindale track (today home to Miller Brewery). They told me that a special new Porsche was meeting us there, and that I was in for a big surprise. So when I pull up at the track, this gorgeous oak green 930 turbo is parked near the starting line. Then Jay tells me that I am going to drag race this 930 and not to be jarred by it blowing by me from the green light. So during the course of about 6 runs against the 930, it never passed me. Jay came over to me and explained that this 930 was a "Press car" and every magazine had been beating on it for a month. The waste gate was failing and was actually hanging open and not able to build any boost at all. So my very light weight 914 2.0 with 7 psi of boost could run 15.4 at 90mph against a heavier 6 cylinder with 6.5:1 c/r running 2 seconds slower ! Anyway, I think this was 930 # 0014 that I ran that day. Check out the 914 launch and the 930 just getting off the line: sorry for the vintage b/w pics !

The proper way for Jay to represent the new 930 Turbo in his magazine was to give it its due respect as in this photo. We are actually staged way at the end of the track in the sand traps of the shut down area. I sold about 50 of the 914 turbo systems in that first year of MSDS, and this little drag race with Jay in the oak green 930 was a great launch !

Same 914 today, but modified into an all steel gt , bi-turbo 3.3L with flat fan.
BTW, anyone into vintage drag racing photos should check out Steve Reyes Photography...the best ! Marty

Whoa! I always thought my former '73 914 2.0 was faster than the specs listed. Lol.
AND, maybe, just maybe, that's why all the early 930's had those funky 914.722.021.10 Jack Straps installed at the factory instead of 930 or 911 part numbers! NICE Ride!

Very cool...
You can just make out the Euro reflectors on the rear bumper of #0014. Too bad someone removed these as they are not on the car today. |
