Headlight Installation Advice

Hello,

I just acquired a nice set of H5 headlgihts for a US spec 1979 911 with the sugar scoop headlights. As these headlights do not include trim rings or mounting items, can somebody please advise me on what parts I will need to perform this installation?

I am figuring I will need mounting screws, trim rings, headlight relay, etc.

However, I would GREATLY welcome any of your advice or guidance on what parts I need to purchase and any modification I may need to do in the bulb plug or else where.

Regards,
Angelo

You will need the H5 headlight mount and an H5 plug. You will also need to rewire your lights to run the H5s. Either get drop in H4s or the Euro H4s as both have better lighting than an H5.

There's a simple adapter for the electrics on getting H5s to work on early cars.

Chris-

I needed a plug adapter pigtail (~ $38 from our host) to mount my H1's in my H5-equipped '87 - converts the H5 plug which is 4 prong (IIRC) to the H1's 3 prong (IIRC)

Angelo, I don't think you should need relays to run H5 in a sugar-scoop car unless you plan on running higher output bulbs.

As Bryan noted, did your H5s you sourced include the mounting 'bosses'? They are a large hunk of grey aluminum that should be affixed to the back of the H5.

Bryan, telling a guy who just bought H5s that he should instead install H4s or H1s or whatever isn't very helpful 8-). While both will outperform the H5s, at least he's remedied the aesthetic.

I sourced my H1 trim rings (outer) on eBay for ~ $60... check there or Pelican classifieds...

Good luck.

Paul - He may not have the lights in hand. FS: H5 Headlights If he is able to back out of the deal, IMHO, it would be the best for him. He'd have to source some H5 trim rings and get them painted to match as well. The mounting bosses appear to be included.

Brian, Kenik and Paul,

Thank you VERY much for the advice. It is greatly appreciated!

Brian,

As I committed myself in purchasing the H5 headlights I had no intention in backing out. Nevertheless, it appears that after exactly 10 years of purchasing a lot of car stuff over the internet (including three vehicles), I may be the victim of fraud. The amount was not much but it is an important reminder for us to due some quick due diligence when buying items from total strangers.

In my case, I saw that the guy had been on Pelican since 2007 and assume everything would be fine. After I paid, I decided to look at what other interesting items the guy may have for sale and saw that the two EXACT items he had sold yesterday had apparently been sold to other people in September. I sent several messages and emails and have not heard anything until now. I would very much like to be wrong here.

So at the end of the day, you are right that I may end up having to purchase H4 headlights after all...... It appears that H5s were not meant to be....

Best regards,
Angelo

Angelo,

I would be happy to send you the headlight trim(black), rubber gasket and screws to restore your faith in the Pelican regulars. They are off a 94 Turbo.

Don't let one tool chase you away. Lots of great guys aNd advice here.

Do your research and if they fit, let me know.
These are free to you, so if they won't work for your car, allow me to sell them or offer them to someone else.

Cheers,

Matt

Fellows,

Apparently, I have good news. I was contacted by user Zeephyrin (Martin) and he explained that both of the items he is re-selling occurred because previous buyers backed-out. As he is out of the country, he informed me that he will be shipping this item next week. Will keep everybody informed.

Matt,

I GREATLY appreciate your generosity and regardless of the outcome, I have NOT lost faith in the members of this board due to one transaction that may (we are still not sure yet) have gone wrong.

In the meantime, I insist on paying for these items and will contact you next week when the H5s are scheduled to arrive.

Once again thank you for the generosity and have a great day!

Regards,
Angelo

Fellows,

Wish to share with you all that my concern was TOTALLY unfounded and that the headlights arrived perfectly packed and as described by Zeephyrin. Will definitely do business again with this fellow Pelican.

Regards,
Slfan
