Thoughts on selling...
I'm sure most of us have seen the meteoric rise in the values of our 930s (84 Canadian in my case, not stock, 135k km or so) and have been tempted to sell.
At what point do you go beyond tempted? Right now my car is down with a bad bearing (bought the parts, loath to endure the labor) and it's hot as heck here, so the anemic AC is not a welcome thought... and frankly I just don't drive it enough to really justify it most of the time. Has your spousal unit pushed you? Mine has when a buddy was gushing over the 6 figure prices we're seeing on low mileage cars. I had to explain that mine is more in the driver category ![]() Anyway... just wanderlust I think. I grew up with a 930 on my wall and now I pass one every day in the garage. |

I'm very tempted. I have a small business and the extra cash always helps. I didn't buy the car as an investment, but it seems it turned out that way.
If I get a good offer I'll let it go and put the cash to good use. There's always another good deal somewhere. Actually, I find the hunt to be a lot of fun. Scott '78 #170 |

I will be putting mine up for sale. But I purchased it as a "barn find" 20k car. It is in need of a full resto but with a 30k investment on this car someone could have a VERY solid driver and even make some money. I am only selling this one because I have a 86 turbo on the way in 24 months. ( and the wife won't let me keep 2 of the same...)
I would love to keep it as it is a fully stock unmodified car but I have to carry on as first intended. |

I recently faced the sell/ don't sell quandary in light of customizing the entire driver's side of my car at the track. I ultimately landed at keeping and repairing the car. My motivators were the thought of relinquishing my piece of automotive history and my kids not having the chance to enjoy what I enjoy so much.
Everyone's situation is different but it seems that these cars in particular can muddy the waters of economic sensibility (for the right reasons). I don't know of anyone who drive's theirs too much. If it brings you happiness without much overall aggravation and undue stress, keep it if you can. However, I would agree with Scott77 that the hunt is definitely fun. Mine took 4 years and I loved every search, phone call, conversation, etc. Good luck with that bearing! |

But I think you're right. The hunt is much more fun than the kill (although they both annoy the heck out of my wife). |

If you don't drive it much and need the scratch, then sell, if not I'd keep it as long as I could. I wish my stocks appreciated like these cars.
Sold (stupidly) my slant just before the surge, subsequent buyer flipped it for a huge profit. Biggest automotive mistake ever. I bought my current car at 47, immed dropped 20k into a rebuild (don't ask...), already offered 80k. But if I sell, I doubt I could be in the $$ position to grab a similar car. Tough decisions no doubt.

I just bought one, so I'm planning on hanging on for a long time. People just came to the realization that the 930 (and subsequently the 964 turbo) is more car, more reliable, and just as exotic as the Italian cars for less money.

Maybe in some parallel universe that doesn't bother much with reality.
![]() And as far as the original topic/question is concerned - the supposedly rising values of these cars means nothing to me with regard to potentially selling - doesn't even enter my mind. Buttofcourse, maintaining OEM originality doesn't concern me either, other than that the discussions about said subject give me reason to point and laugh!

I put mine up for sale. If it sells at a high price, great. If not, I still win. Lots of summer left.

I know the feeling TT, I was about to pull the trigger on a factory 89 slant coupe in dec 2010, for 38k. I don't fathom what it's worth now.
Then my buddy bought a one of the first 991's back in early 2012. Hated the way it drove between the seating position and electric steering. Started looking at GT3's since I felt that market was going to pop, since I bet a lot of purists were not going to like the 991. I found an 07 997 GTRS with 22k miles for 75k, was a little hesitant. Guess what that car like 125k. More missed opportunities. I believe these newer cars are driving the older more analog cars higher, same thing is happening with BMWs. |

If you don't need the cash, wait. I was tempted to sell my '66 and '69S a few years ago when they were approaching $150K in combined value...very tempted. Decided I love my cars and was going to keep them, since I didn't need to sell them. Guess what? Those two cars are far more valuable now (almost tripled), I still have them and still drive/enjoy them. They're like a 401K that you can drive.
![]() Regarding the 930...they were built in far smaller volumes that any early S. I am convinced that the 930s will one day reach values that will match or exceed the early S, because the top dog in the Porsche lineup is always the top object of Porsche lust. Looking back in 5 years on today's prices will likely cause us to kick ourselves for not car hoarding. Drive it, love it, keep it and wait. History says we are still on the flat part of the J-curve.

I don't need the cash (in fact last night I was asking myself what I'd actually do with the cash if I did sell, and all roads led to buying another car -- which likely wouldn't continue to appreciate).
I almost sold the car a couple years ago, and I'm glad I didn't. I did have the opportunity around the same time to trade my E39 M5 for an E30 M3 but I balked. That was a mistake that I'm still kicking myself over. I pulled the rear apart last night and the bearing is trashed. All sorts of debris in there, but I can't get the axle (or the flange, whatever it is with the wheel studs). I think that the bearing heat fused itself and I'm going to have to really work on it. Labor of love ![]() And since everyone loves pictures...

Drove mine to the soccer game under sunny skies. Can't get gas without people asking about it. Go to dinner and everyone loves it. How can I sell it??

![]() It's kind of crazy now I hardly ever drive it so it won't get 50,000 miles on it. I have to take it out every once in a while just to get my turbo fix. I've had it since 1996 and still love it.

The way these cars are appreciating any excess miles you put on it will be negated by condition. Don't sweat it, drive the sob

I'd be guided by how much you have invested of yourself (not money) in the car. I bought my 77 Turbo in 2004, toiled for many hours making it right, then sold it to a friend in 2008. I regretted the decision immediately. My friend sold it back to me last night. I got lucky. I would say that, if you have invested hundreds of hours, then don't sell. If the car has just been sitting and you have not felt inspired to put hours of time in it, then sell. There may be some kind of speculative bubble around early Turbos, now. It's probably a good time to sell.
