930 Parking Brake

I have a 1986 930 with 42,000 miles that I thought was having a passenger side rear wheel bearing going bad, as i suddenly heard rattling and grinding from that wheel. Upon further investigation, I found that with the back of the car jacked up and applying hand brake, I can move the rear wheels approx. 1/2' forward and backward before the brake actually holds. There is a metallic "clunking" sound when it stops. The brake handle feels tight, moves several clicks and appears to be adjusted properly.
My question is this: should the wheels move AT ALL once the parking brake is applied? I have worked on many cars in my home garage, and usually once the parking brake is applied, the wheel cannot be moved at all. Could I have springs, etc. that might have broken, etc. or is this characteristic of the 930 parking brake?

Joe, the wheels do not move at all with parking brake on. The parking brakes on these cars are crude, drum brakes and you no doubt have some broken parts there.

Page 158 shows the parts breakdown (items 30,31,32 and so forth)-

Sounds like a broken shoe spring. You can look under the rear at the back of the backing plate and you should see the Hook of the spring in the backing plate hole.
Regardless, it sounds like you need to pull off the rotor to see what is going on.

Parking Brake

Thanks for the replies. I thought the wheels should not even budge with the parking brake on!

930 Parking Brake Update

Well, finally removed the passenger side caliper and rotor, and the parking brake is in tact and nothing loose. If I turn the wheel by hand, I still hear the squeaking and scraping sound like it is coming from the hub. I am going to remove the axle stub, hoping maybe just a cv joint?
I just cannot believe a 930 with only 42,000 miles could have a bad wheel bearing!

Parking brake update #2

Ok, so I just tried a few more tests on my noise problem. If I hold the axle on the passenger side, I can physically move the wheel hub back and forth approx 1/2 inch before I get resistance. There is also a metallic "knocking" sound when it stops both ways. Drivers side does NOT seem to do this. Also, the cv joint boot seems to "move" towards the transmission while this is happening.
CV joint coupling?
