Warm up techniques

I have an 87 3.3 turbo in my car. I heard that turbo owners need to let the car warm up before going hard into boost. How exactly do you determine this? Does the engine have to be a regular operating temperature? Please advise, thanks!

Also my car it missing the fast idle sensor? I'm not sure what it's called but it won't idle on its own until it's warmed up. Can someone confirm the proper name of this part so I can look up how to replace & fix it..

Standard procedure is to drive the car below 4K and off boost until temp hits the first white mark. Don't know how mandatory that is but seems reasonable.
Several items contribute to raising the idle when the engine is cold. Most influence is from the Aux Air Regulator. Secondary is the Aux Air Valve (if present) and then the Thermol Time Switch which kicks the timing up.
