Cool Half mile racing: I had the greatest time ever!

I have always been a fan of half mile to full mile racing. It is akin to drag racing, but much easier on drivetrain parts due to the rolling start. Ideally, a pair of cars roll together to approximately 40mph, and at the first cones on the tarmac, you go full tilt.

On December 13th, I had the opportunity to run one of my 911s at the Gila Bend Airstrip, near the outskirts of Phoenix, Arizona. The event was hosted by Omega Motorsports, and appropriately named "No Fly Zone"

This is a blue 1976 911 which has pretty much been a test bed for me. It now has a look which pays homage to the 1974 IROC, but is infused with a twin Turbocharged 996 engine, running on 91 octane, and a water methanol kit. With my current setup, tuned on an AEM EMS, it makes a little north of 800hp.

Here is a video of my best pass of the day, versus a boosted Corvette: 168mph.

http://youtu.be/73foOSKICws

Not bad for an old girl.

I am still so excited how stable the old chassis is, event at such high speeds. I cannot wait for the next one. If you have not experienced such, I would highly encourage it.

Cool! That's the kind of racing that suits me these days.

So where was the Corvette?

Looks like fun!
My buddy's convertible 'vette just went 117mph in the 1/8th, cannot imagine what it would do from a rolling start in the 1/2 mile. These days you have to have at least 1000HP to be in the game, it's nuts.

Looked like 7900rpm shift point, and then 7800rpm. Tires are holding it well.

Absolutely! That is one of the reasons I find this so appealing.

Thanks. It is a very laid back event, and you could run whoever you desire.

Not at all. A majority of the cars at this event were street fairing vehicles, without any cages at all. One more shot from SEMA:

The vehicle was besides me at the take off, but my chassis was a bit faster to the end of the half mile.

That is what is so cool about this event. There were everything from factory 996s and 964s to Bugatti Veyrons and Ferraris. My 911, what definitely in the top 40 percentile of the 100+ cars in attendance despite being 200 horses, or so, shy of 1000.

It depends on how deep you desire for me to go. I run an AEM EMS, twin BTX5857 turbos, custom Arias Pistons, sleeved block halves, upgraded IMS bearing, custom steel rods, custom camshafts designed by yours truly, custom valve spring windings, lots of fabwork, water methanol kit, custom milspec wiring, 6 puck clutch, on r888 rubber....and more.

9000 redline, and shifts hovered in the 8700-9000 range. Thanks.
