PLS HELP!! WTB - '79 930 York A/C Compressor
I'm probably one of many looking for a '79 930 York A/C Compressor.
I've tried all dismantlers, Pelican, Google search, eBay etc and have never seen one listed for sale. I have a fully original '79 930 except for the *%#! A/C Compressor and would love to score one to finish off my car.

Any help, ideas or better yet an actual A/C Compressor would be appreciated. I'll pay top dollar. I'm sure they are out there in someone's garage boxed up with other old parts, I just need to locate that needle. :confused:

I just bought one for $50 last month. They're out there. Remember, they are identical to the ones installed in an SC.

I don't think so. Turbo 3.0s used the same compressor as SCs, but early 3.3s used a York with a different valve and cylinder arrangement and maybe other differences.

Pharris, I'm curious as to why you want to put one of those turd Yorks back into service?

I believe that all of the factory A/C from roughly 1970 through 1983, except Turbo 3.3 cars, used the York 210 heavy duty compressor, an aluminum, twin cylinder, 10 c.i. displacement unit. The Turbo 3.3 used a York 209 super-compact mini unit, with rear mounted fittings. The 209 mini is also aluminum, with 9 c.i. displacement unit and smaller outside dimensions than a standard 209. All of these units are good for 6000 rpm. You should find a nameplate on the compressor, identifying the model and date of manufacture.

As far as I can tell, there are differences between the two compressors - including the clutch and sheave - but many parts will interchange.

I think that earlier 911s used York compressors, too, but I am not sure of the model.

York compressors were used in many auto a/c systems, including Volvo and Mercedes, so parts and used units should be easy to come by. I don't know what other cars, besides the Turbo 3.3, used the 209 mini, and the rear fittings may be hard to find.

You should be able to find a York service manual on line, which will help to sort this out and to repair your unit if need be.

Kenikh - looking into the headlight washers per your comment I found a reference to somewhere around VIN 817 they switched from snorkel to flush headlight washers. That would mean you are correct and I should have snorkel. I'm assuming those are about as hard to find as the York Compressors. I did see a post for a website in Germany that supplies aftermarket snorkel washers, not sure quality but they appear to be a great match aesthetically. Comes as a set with all parts including washers.

Ronnie - fair question and not the first time I've heard the word "turd" used to describe the York compressor. I definitely DON'T want one to stay cool in the summer time, originality is the only reason. Purchased the car several months back and it is so close to being fully stock that I'm wanting to complete it. Not to say I'm not constantly thinking of all the cool modifications I could/should make to it.

One thing I've learned is that there is a lot of confusion surrounding the 'correct' compressor on a '79 930. Every dismantled I call says they have plenty available. When I ask for a pic prior to purchase they get all defensive and quote me how many years they have been Porsche experts. It always ends the same; they don't have one and they 'forgot' the '79 used a different compressor.

I think the reason they are so hard to come by is that they truly were turds and have been flushed long ago.

Anyway, I would still like to find one and if anyone has any ideas or comes across one please let me know.

Pharris, understood. I don't think in terms of originality with these cars, but was wondering if that was your motivation for a York.

Just for the sake of bullshatting, the York compressor gets its turd distinction primarily because it is heavy, vibrates a lot (compared to a rotary compressor, etc.) and requires a lot of energy to operate (I would have to look up the stats, but I know it uses more than double the horsepower of a rotary version). I think it performs OK in terms of compressing the refrigerant.

One guy you might check with about buying a York is Charlie Griffith. I know that he has replaced many of these over the years and might have some on hand. He is also very friendly and helpful.

They are out there. I just picked up a 75 York for $200.

If only the guy could get the bracket to me.................

Hey Patrick, yes, it looks like this is the one you need. Here are pics of Larry's 79 with original AC. I had two more bites but they turned out to be regular SC units as usual.
