noob with a few questions on 930

Hi,
2nd time poster. I put a post on the engine build board and was recommended I come over here. Anyways, I'm planning on a rebuild on my '79 930 with 80 k miles that I've had since 1992. Reason for the rebuild are numerous leaks. The heads have never been off. The orig. owner replaced the reactors with manifolds and removed the rest of the emission crap which I have. After tossing around EFI I've decided to stay with CIS for originality's sake and I'm not after mega HP. My plan is the basic CIS build with a performance K27, SC cams, rarely8 headers, larger IC, BL WUR, Supertec studs, ARP rod hardware, have Anchor do the heads, maybe MSD 6AL2. I'm happy with 325-350 rwhp. After reading the entire sealant thread I've decided I do not want to glue the main webs with loctite and if necessary I'll spend the coin to shuffle pin rather than glue the webs per Henry's method. Seems like I'd just be asking for trouble either from oil system contamination, larger than desirable main clearances or both since this will be my first 911 build. Also, if the original piston and no top fin barrels mic OK should I reuse the original barrels or buy new fully finned ones? Will try to get a pic up of the car, it's a very nice all original Minerva Blue sunroof delete. I dropped the engine when I got it to set the valves, hydraulic tensioners, k26 rebuild and a general clean up. A few years ago I replaced the rear stub axle bearings in the banana arms, what a fun job. I'll also be going thru the gearbox. Thanks, hope I can contribute something. Also throw in an AFR readout on the build sheet.

Hello from another '79 Minerva owner.

You should have no problem getting to your HP goal with the plan you've laid out. I'm not sure I'd have the case shuffle pinned. I don't know that's really necessary except in the big HP builds. I'd suggest using RSR rocker shaft seals...a little extra oil leak protection. At 80k, I'd guess there's a good chance your P&Cs don't measure to spec. If they need replacing, you can bump displacement and compression ratio a bit.

Let see some pics of the car.

Looking forward to the build thread. Sounds like you've done some homework. Don't forget to get Wayne's How-to Rebuild your 911 book.
Where are you located? Some of the headers offer better heat than others for the Northerners.
And yes pics, especially of the Minerva Blue variety, are mandatory.

I'm in western NY, near the mistake on the lake city of Buffalo. Yeah, I have to buy Wayne's book. I've done several automotive, bike and snowmobile engines but this is the first P car. This car doesn't see any really cold weather driving, fall is the coldest. R8 headers really look nice to me. I've got a nice shop with a lathe, MIG,TIG, press, etc. I usually make my own special tools which I plan to do for this job. Was considering making my own headers but decided against that. My eyes aren't what they used to be for thin wall TIG. Yes on the RSR rocker shaft seals and the viton stud o-rings.

Sound like you have your place set up well. I will keep an eye on this thread.

Hate to be the forum dick - I usually just leave that to Paul and Ronnie - but, sorry, if you don't post pics the car doesn't exist.

As for the build of your (currently alleged) 930's engine, I agree that a standard sealing of the case is all you'll need for the level of build you propose. Sealing the case and timing the cams were the two items that caused me the most angst going into my build. Like you, I've built many engines over the years, but my 930 build was (is, actually, as the engine is built but not yet installed) my first Porsche. I can assemble an old school American short block in an afternoon but quickly confirmed what I knew going in; this ain't no old school American V8!

On the power end of things, I would suspect you'll easily meet your HP desires with the combination you spelled out. I certainly hope so, as your proposed build is very similar to mine, except that, along with Rarlyl8 headers, a K27 (also from Brian), SC grind cams, 1 bar spring, Andial Racing intercooler etc. I decided to twin plug my heads - something you should at least consider.

Okay, time for those pics!

Welcome boosted79. Always great to hear when a new 930 owner posts on this forum. You will find a lot of knowledge and helpful folks here.

Looking forward to your progress, but as nkowi said in the thread before, the unwritten rule is, "sorry, if you don't post pics the car doesn't exist."

Thank you for the well-earned accolades, my friend, but one point of correction; Paul is not so much a forum Richard, but rather, his time on the forum is spent looking for Richard(s)!!!

Love the color combo

Welcome and look forward to reading about your engine rebuild.
Beautiful car - love that color!
Cheers,

Beautiful car!

I have a set of Webcams SC grind with about 2K miles on them if you go that route. There is plenty of info here on SC or 964 grind. Worth a bit of research.

Shuffle-pinning the case is a waste of time and money for your build level.
I think you're over-thinking this sealant issue. To each his own and all that, I don't see what the issue is with Loctite 574. Many, many engines built, and never an oil leak from an area of the engine with a proper amount of 574 applied.
Henry is spot-on.

Wow, hardly looks like an 80k car. So damn clean. Great ext color with my fav air-cooled interior color!

redturbo911 01-04-2015 07:01 PM

Very nice loving the color. Keep us posted.

Thank you for the compliments. The paint, although original and in nice shape , does have numerous stone chips on the nose. The orig. owner was from NJ and probably spent a lot of time on the NJ pike. Having lived there a couple years it's easy to understand. With what these cars are doing value wise I'm hesitant to do any non-reversible mods such as twin plugs. Re. the loctite 574, my concern is not with sealing since I'd use the threebond on the case perimeter. My concern with the 574 on the main webs is the potential for opening up the main clearances since the 574 starts to skim so quickly, my understanding is that it starts to cure as soon as it contacts metal. The only reason for the 574 on the webs is to glue the webs together to create a stiffer case assembly, correct? Don't the case through-bolt o-rings take care of the sealing? Has anyone ever plastigaged the mains without the 574 on the webs and then taken the same case and plastigage again with the 574 on the webs? Maybe I'll try that just to see if there is any difference. No shuffle pins req'd is good news.

Nice Minerva Blue. Looks like mine (but with brown interior).

When I built my engine, I left the bearing webs dry. Factory didn't use sealant there, so that was good enough for me.

klefroid 01-05-2015 12:47 PM

Mine 77 3.3 came also Minerva blue, but previous owner did repaint it!!!!
I should have the same car color wise but it's dark blue now!

I'll hope one day mine looks as good as yours!
Any idee how much 930's where delivered with color code 304?

Again, very nice car! SmileWavy
