Pretty rare combo - Tom Elerding here has the same one out in CA... will make for a pretty stunning car once sorted.

It's too bad too because andrew15 parted an 86 turbo with that same interior... It is all gone from my place now but if you pm him, he might have a few odds and ends still.

Agree. Conversely, I prefer an interested buyer to check out my 930 condition and the market value before making me a offer. Congratulations, to me you did the right thing. Over the years I've found this way to be best for both.

More work on the Barn Find

I have made some progress, the weather in North Carolina was nice today to I decided to remove the bumper, catalytic converter and muffler from the car. Getting the cat off of the turbo without breaking the studs took lots of heat with a Mapp torch.

I am surprised I didn't snap one off.

Alternator work

I got the alternator tested and the slip rings are worn, voltage regulator is shot, and front bearing feels rough and the seals are toast.

I found a source for replacement slip rings, Nachi bearings, and a replacement voltage regulator. I will post up a detailed list of parts used and suppliers once its all back together and putting out 14V

Pretty cool find and nice to see another one saved. It's amazing how well these cars come apart even after years of sitting.

If you get sick of fiddling with that crusty old alternator do yourself a favor and get one of these 160 amp high output ones. I have one and xbmwguy Frank gets the credit for finding these on ebay.

There is no core charge and they are rebuilt from a Valeo alternator. They put bigger everything inside it and even with 4 AC fans running full blast during S. Florida summers, headlights on, etc, the thing shows 13.5 volts charging at idle speed. A stock 90 amp one can't do that.
It's a really fantastic alternator and they have their phone number in their ebay ad so you can call them go from there.

I have to say it's amazing what the sun has done to the dashboard in your car and humidity or whatever has done to corrode the outside of the engine case.
You have quite a project there... good luck with it!

Engine Code

I thought to look at the engine code today.
engine number is 68G00965 with a star before and after the number. I was able to decode it to US turbo manufactured in 1986, but I just wondered what the star before and after was for?

Stars are always before and after the engine number stamping...at least they are on all of my cars, 1966 - 1980.

Being from the Midwest, I never considered that, road salt from winter road work will do the same.

My car came from Michigan via Boston, sold new in Boston and lived there for 4 years then to Michigan until 4 years ago. I was told it was never driven in bad weather and after seeing some of the cars in need of restoration, I'm a believer.

I had the turbo rebuilt right after I purchased the car, I did the R&R and the exhaust bolts had some rust on them, that's it. Had it on a lift the day I picked it up and it has no rust any where else.

No PPI, A knowledgeable friend here in my home town handled the transaction and transportation aspect on my behalf.

Now, I feel like I walked through a field of cow pies and came out carrying roses.

I got so lucky, twice actually. I got mine right before prices went skyward.

not to bring up price again and not to burst anyones balloon, but a barn find is really only good if the price is good/and or the car is in really good shape. this one needs a lot of work.
you could easily put 40k into a car like this to get it right and the unknown can really bite you the hinney.

i would not pull heads JUST to change studs.

what part of NC are you in. SC here.

Bernie must have borrowed Harry Potters wand and made a few passes over those dilivar head studs. I have a few of the cars mentioned above and if I got the dilivar for free I would toss them in the garbage but that is just me.


The stars are normal. Here is a case out of one of my 935's and it has the stars too

Ok, some more progress on the 911 turbo. I got the engine/transmission pulled out this weekend. Previous owner had fabricated an engine cradle from the drawings in the Factory manual.



That plus some carefully placed wood blocks allowed me to lower the engine in a nice controlled manner.



Engine down safe and split from transmission. Now the fun can begin.
