"Barn find" 1986 911 turbo
 
I found the car through a friend of mine at work. He mentioned that a friend of his had a Porsche that was "REALLY FAST" but it wouldn't start cause the battery was dead. And it had been sitting outside in his driveway for 9 years. He thought the guy was interested in making it go away. I asked how fast? He responded it was the fastest car he had ever been in. I asked if it was a 911 turbo. He said whats a 911. So I did a little Google work and pulled up a picture of a 911 turbo, he said yeah that's it, wrong color though. Long story short, I bought it and towed it home to share space with my two 924 turbo project cars. Seems to require a 22mm allen key. With vise grips anything can become a tool.

Nice... Garnet red metallic, with factory gold wheels, and I'm assuming champagne interior. It's unfortunate it couldn't have be stored indoors all those years. Good luck, they're among the best porsches ever made..

Prior to the sale I suspected I had found a gem in the rough. The car had 68,000 miles on the clock. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1422371627.jpg
The owner said he bought it in 1987 from the dealer in Charlotte, North Carolina. When I pulled the vehicle history report it indicated that there was only one owner, the dealer had put 7000 miles on it between 1986 and 1987. So I am now the second owner.

Took about an hour to get to this step, then about another to figure out how to get those little 3 screws and washers off the rear housing without dropping them or breaking anything.

Flipped the fan housing over and carefully dropped it on the two blocks to allow the alternator to "hammer" itself out.

Alternator rebuild
 
The rear bearing tolerance ring is marked Porsche, the Valeo voltage regulator has a date code of 4/90. The slip rings are worn and the owner indicated he was having charging problems when he parked the car in 2003. All the diodes test good, I will get the unit tested as it is, but have already ordered rebuild parts, brushes, slip rings, and bearings. Hopefully I can rebuild it myself. I would really like to rewire it for an oversize external regulator. I should be able to clip the leads on the existing regulator, make a harness and put a volt regulator over next to the ignition box. Has anyone ever done this?

Does an 86 have an external regulator inside the engine bay on the driver's side?

I know some were internally regulated... These are like $25.

What a shame to see the car get to this state of repair for a simple and sub $500 repair...

Good 'on ya for seeking out the car and bringing it back. This is pretty similar to my 77 911 when I got it... neglected but had good bones and everything was repairable. In the case of my car the 'trusted mechanic' was incompetent and had the CIS so badly out of tune it would hardly run - the PO got fed up and sold it cheap.

It is an internally regulated alternator. The Valeo regulator is $65 the Huco runs about $30. But my past experience with Bosch voltage regulators and the location of this one being so hard to get to if and when it needs to be replaced. Why not spend the few extra bucks and put one like this external.

Also check if the cables at the starter are tight , The power from battery goes the starter to the alternator and back , i replaced three alternators and regulators thinking they were the problem, I would start with a fresh Battery and make sure all connections are nice and tight , Grounds starter cables and so on,

I discussed price with the owner, he had know idea the current value of the car. I gave him a few days to look up the car value, and come up with a number. He named his price, I tried to negotiate down from that number. He didn't want to budge and I paid his price. I will not be further discussing the price I paid, but I do not feel like I took advantage of him.

I don't believe you can find those two separate anymore - really don't want them - alternators nowadays come with the regulator within... the way to go.

BTW, amazing how that IC rubber seal is still together at the four corners... I buy it from you, but don't take advantage of me now - kidding.

There are some things you may or may not know about these cars... I am assuming this is your first 911 / 930.

Rule number 1. These are dry sump. Don't fill up the oil based on the dip stick level before you start it. Change the oil and put in 10 quarts and then check it warm. If you top up the sump with it cold, you will have a big mess to deal with.

if purchased new in charlotte, it would have been sold by Barrier & Beck Porsche. it may have been Skipper Beck's personal car. Skip passed away too young. He loved his turbos!!

The license plate frame says Beck-Hendrick. I am new to the 930 but not new to cars and things mechanical. I appreciate and welcome all the advice. I will be dropping the engine out next to get a good look at it. I assume that I will at least pull the heads and do an inspection of everything. I am very concerned with the condition of the head studs, if the Dilvar has not yet died from stress corrosion cracking I fear it soon will. Sitting in the humid air of Eastern North Carolina for 9 years will do some nasty things to unprotected metal. Can anyone determine if the head studs are original from the picture of topside of engine? I thought the Dilvar studs were bigger around than the steel ones, and to my eye the head studs all look intact and not corroded.

Those studs look OK to me. Seriously think about pulling off the heads - this is not a simple afternoon job on these engines - if you do go down this path, get Wayne Dempsey's book on rebuilding these engines.

You can retorque the head studs with the valve covers off. Honestly, I don't know if those head studs would be worse off if they were heat cycled regularly over the past 9 years as opposed to sitting for 9 years.

I am not questioning your mechanical aptitude or experience - I thought I knew all this stuff too until I rebuilt my first 911 engine... the dilivar head studs look like the lower ones on my engine.

The original dilivar head studs on your year of Turbo are painted black (on some other 911 models & years they are goldish in color), so based on your picture, I would say those are the originals.

You are probably aware of this, but if not, all of the head studs on the turbo engines are dilivar (top and bottom), and in the opinions and experience of many here and in the 911 forum, a snap just waiting to happen.

Maybe he's lucky, but my mechanic said he's never had a dilavar stud let go on a 930 or 935 in 40+ years. I was going to go Supertec and he talked me out of it.

^^^ Well that's a first for me, as I have never heard of an experienced mechanic suggesting to re-use, or buy new, dilivar studs (other than the 993TT, all-thread variety) - interesting.

Great find! Replace the studs, not worth the risk and if you already have the heads off it is easy. Unless they snap being removed. If I was you, I would split the case and inspect everything, clean the crank oil passages etc then reseal as in a rebuild. Have fun.

Came as a surprise to me given prevailing wisdom here. He knows his stuff. I've been with him for a decade and in that time a) he's never steered me wrong b) I've seen more 935s and 962s in that shop (amongst other equally interesting cars) than I can shake a stick at. He's been at it since '72, so it's on his side. Of course if I pop a head stud during test pulls... ��
