fan/alternator squeak.. what did I do here?
I replaced the coil for my 930. I must have mounted it up a bit to high on the fan shround. I tightened the aftermarket intercooler, started the car, and there was a a "squeak" "squeak" "squeak" high frequency sound from the vicinity.
I saw that I had managed to squish the coil between the shround and intercooler. Silly.... I assumed I deformed the shroud. I loosened everything up, slid the coil a bit lower in the bracket, and srewed it all back together. Plenty of clearance. Still get the sqeaking, which is faint, and correlates to the fans rotation... I don't see that the blades are rubbing... Any ideas? Could this have somehow ruined a alternator bearing? Fan rubbing on the back of the housing? Plan to address this weekend but any preliminary thoughts appreciated... |
Ah, in true 930 DIY paranoia, we tend to look for the most devastating cause. Personally, deforming the shroud is most likely not a possibility. Squeaking and fan rubbing would not sound the same anyway.
Could just be coincidence and time for a new belt. Might just for kicks and giggles spray some belt dressing on the belt. Bet that does the trick. |
And in case you don't have a can of belt dressing laying around, a bar of soap held against the inside of the belt should temporarily stop the squeaking - if it's indeed the belt.

Thanks for the happy thoughts :). Will work on it this weekend...
