How is this much rust even possible???

From a current EBay add in Hawaii: Porsche 930 930 | eBay

I'm on a phone, so if no one beats me to it, I'll post the pics later.

<60k miles! Motor turns! The snorkel washers are intact!

On the bright side the pics can let the buyer make an informed decision and they thankfully didn't show the rockers.

I want to know how they scraped all the coral off.

Kept near the ocean/seaspray, maybe flooded sometime or kept outside?

Or, all three at the same time.

BTW, I went ahead added the below to this thread:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-930-turbo-super-charging-forum/843170-79-930-vin-mfg-date-info-questions-4.html

At least the car added some value, by defining a new high VIN number for a 2/79 build date.

This will show market value of a average 1979 930. This car is not average but after its restoration it could be a 2 or 3. This car needs $50,000 in repairs maybe more. So the current bid is actually $66,700 at this point after you factor repairs.

kenikh 05-29-2015 09:31 AM

This car needs a $100K of work at retail. I am guessing a VERY handy enthusiast will buy this car and pick away at it over time. If I were retired and had some cash and time to burn, this would be a great car to buy at the right price. It is very quickly going past that right price, though.

And let's not kid ourselves: all restored cars can be made into 1s, even this one.

jfort 05-29-2015 10:37 AM

It made me sick to look at those pictures

aschen 05-29-2015 10:37 AM

I think the actual retail value of that car is negative, but I have respect for anyone who can make it right again

kenikh 05-29-2015 10:55 AM

9309800442 is now forever captured in its original state...

Only $50k to make this car right? Thanks man, I needed a laugh this afternoon.

Shadetree930 05-29-2015 12:03 PM

Not sure that much of this car is going to be original when it gets released into the wild.

JohnJL 05-29-2015 12:07 PM

Ill buy the VIN plate....oops that also just got captured for posterity....

slow&rusty 05-29-2015 04:43 PM

The car was parked outside on an island, that's how that much rust is possible.

Probably parked under a tree and left to rot. Leaves fall and get stuck to the car. Leaves turn into compost. Compost holds moisture and then you get the rust you see here.

boosted79 05-30-2015 05:06 AM

What a mess. Looks like it was driven on the beach and into the surf. Look at me, I'm cool, I've got a 930 dune buggy.

turbo owner 05-30-2015 05:08 AM

Auction was ended, did it sell?

boosted79 05-30-2015 11:11 AM

Said it was ended by seller due to error in original listing. Maybe he forgot to mention it was used as an artificial reef.
