magnetic drain plug, 77 3.0
Hello,
I did my yearly oil change today on my 77 3.0 Turbo Carrera, with the new oil Porsche recommends. The guy also recommended to take the red oil filter - nice one. But when changing the oil I found metal splinter on my magnetic drain plug under the engine. None on oil tank plugs, nor on turbo oil drainage tank plug. See the photo attached. Any guess where this could be from, and what that means? Car has not even 50K miles on it, did the top head maintenance a year ago, all studs are fine, car runs great, no blue smoke, all fine. Thanks for any help! S ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Finding shavings on that plug is normal, it's working, although it looks a bit excessive. That long one is a bit strange, prob didn't have the opportunity to get ground up before the mag picked it up. What is your typical oil change interval? I change mine every 3k I get less than a quarter of the shavings you see...

Looks pretty normal to me with the exception of what appears to be a thin piece of wire? Piece of a thread?
I also see some "fuzz" or magnetic shavings on mine during oil changes. Its normal expected wear from friction. Tinker |

Thanks, guys.
This was like 2000 miles, 1 year. The long one is not wire, it was very thin and broke in parts when I took it off the plug Oh well, guess I can drive til the next oil change and check again? |

as other have already stated, some fuzz on the magnet is normal. you can collect a sample of the drain oil at the next change and send it out for analysis. that will tell you for sure if anything strange is going on (like bearings on their way out).

Most of that is probably from the cam chain sprockets. When new chains and sprockets are installed they wear in to each other. If the sprockets are not in correct alignment there's more wear.
