Nippondenso compressor original ?
 
Hello everyone some questions about my a/c compressor on a 1979 turbo. Is it original to car ? Is this a 10p 15c. ? More important when I turn pulley as it sits with my hand sounds to be touching or rubbing metal but it does turn freely. Possibly bad bearings and can fan clutch , pulley assembly be rebuilt for this unit ? Note clutch does engage and work when motor runs. Are there rebuild kits for this unit or should I replace entire compressor? Note I replaced most hoses with barrier type and new front condenser , dryer and fan in smugglers box. It depends what your vin is. The late build cars(very late) had Nippondenso. The rest had York.

The vin is later in year with 12 /79. Date stamp

No I do not believe that to be accurate. It should have a York 209. An awful boat anchor of a piece. Be thankful its not there. With that said though... Mine is still in place & blows cold air.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1441413083.jpg

The York compressors were on the 1979 930 up to around vin 1000 give or take. The Nippondenso came after that. There were changes during the 1979 model year such as the headlight washers, headlight adjustment bezels, radio knobs, speedometers, sport seat changes, a/c vents and a/c compressors. There are numerous threads on this. The later '79 cars got the changes that the 1980 models had and the A/C compressor was one of them. A car with a build date of 12/79 is very late and I have only seen three or four others. Two paint to sample cars with vins in the low 1150's and a red car with vin in the low 1100 range.

I have no doubt that summation of details put forth is correct. However, as said, I do not believe HIS compressor to be accurate and I would have assumed it would have been a York.

Nevertheless my thoughts are that it looks just like the popular exchange unit that was used once the originals were retired. I have one on the shelf (new in vintage box) as I write this.

Jay I believe the compressor to be original as my serial number is 1116 plus it also had old hoses and just does not look changed from car. More important any idea or experience with just rebuilding or replacing pulley and clutch mechanism?

I have pictures somewhere of 1115 when it was for sale. It also had the Nippondenso and had a 12/79 build date.

Where was I when the lat VIN cars were available? That is much better than the York. How did I end up with the boat anchor? I would bet that this compact compressor does not shake the car like the York either.

Man, your "boat anchor " commentary cracked me up (almost as funny as Kenik buying one of those, ON PURPOSE, with the intent to use it :D). And you'd be right about the lack of shaking - no perceptible vibration from the Nippondenso; only a slight drop in idle RPM when engaged (about 100-200 RPM drop).

I am going to try to meet up with Kenik at Rennsport V and talk him out of the 'ol 209.

About the only advantage the 209 has is that I hear they are nearly impossible to kill. I proclaim them the cockroach of compressors.
