The label "drag radials" may need clarification. I spoke to my 'Vette buddy again about these particular tires. He said he really liked them and they were very stable for street driving, but he doesn't hit the curves like I do. He has sense moved on to a more aggressive brand of tire that he states has a wrinkle wall like Tippy was talking about. He said these do not wrinkle as the sidewall is too short.
As for running big tires I've never had anything smaller than a 315 on any 911/930 I've owned. Most ran 345's. I've done big/little combos for decades, so I've been through the normal issues. I didn't know these tires were "drag radials" when I bought them but now that I do know that, and have taken in consideration all you all have said, they probably need to go. |
Brian I have had good results with the "newer" version of the Nitto extreme 555 315/35/17s. They too felt a little unsettling when new but now after a few hundred miles feel very good and at a good price point for the street as I typically go through 2-3 sets rear to one set front

That's really good news, I like the way these tires look and really don't want to risk scratching up my newly painted rims by changing out the tires if I can help it. It's a street car so I can put a few hundred miles on it and still have fun while waiting to see if the tires settle out. They aren't the least bit dangerous, they just don't feel the same as the super fat Pirellis. I really miss not being able to blow them off in 1st gear or sliding a corner, that's a lot of fun!

I know i'm late to this thread, but I had the EXACT same issue. I ordered Nitto NT05s, and they mistakenly got NT05Rs for the rear, which are the drag radial version. To say the handling was unsettled would be putting it lightly. Once I realized the mistake I had them swap them out for the correct tires and it is 1000% better. I'm very happy with the NT05s now.

According to Summit, these tires are geared towardso better handling than others (never found this on Nitto's website?).
Maybe it is ok in turns? Wouldn't think so. But, after coming from Michelin Pilot Sports, nearly every tire feels squishy to me. |

Seriously, these to me are not the most stable tires for a front engine, the 930 is rear (plus IC, turbo, etc., over a NA car), further exasperating the issue. Seems too sketchy to try daily use in this configuration. Safety first! :) |
I'm going to give them a few hundred miles and see what happens, they aren't dangerous just not what I want them to be. If they don't improve significantly they'll have to go as I enjoy driving the car too much to settle for a substandard experience. Another factor for waiting is we are getting ready to add a BUNCH of power to the engine. I don't have any idea what to expect but I do know that sticky tires will be required!

Ha! Yep, but guess where it was nice and frosty! |
Well it looks like after a few hundred miles and a few cold tire burnouts these tires are coming into their own and handling much better. I hit the mountains this weekend and worked the roads progessively harder until up to par. These dudes stick!

I love my drag radials unless the road is wet.
