2007 911 Bad Water Pump?
I have a four month old 2007 911. Have put some miles on it: 7,000 miles. Two days ago I hear a ringing/whistling sound coming from the engine. I take it to the dealer thinking its a belt. They tell me it is the water pump. The bearings failed. Does this sound right? I can't imagine a vehicle so well engineered could have such a failure. Considering today's economy I am concerned they are trying to make a little extra money on the warranty repair. Although it does not immediately impact me financially, it tells me these folks cannot be trusted for non-warranty repairs. Any opinions? Thanks.

You do not say how many miles are on the car. Not Porsche specific, but if any coolant leaked past the seal into the water pump bearing it could cause the bearing to fail pretty quick, usually there would be some coolant leaking from the water pump and usually there is a drip hole.

Water pumps fail in all cars. Get a second opinion, and if it’s the same just replace the pump.
Edit: You might want to move this to the Water Cooled Cars, if it's the pump you need to address is quickly. This forum is Air Cooled.
