1/2 bay Garretson Shorty or full bay longneck??
Some back story- I am the second owner of a 79 930. The OO passed away over 14 yrs ago and the car sat stored at a shop in NY. Fast forward many years later, I purchase the car from the widow and the car is missing the Garretson IC, the dial boost, the wheels, the boost pressure sending unit....so I am slowly trying to replace those parts and restoring the car to its original condition.
If I am making a mistake looking for a short neck 1/2 bay garretson- let me know. The car has a bigger k27 7200 and is a built 3.4/ twin plug etc. On there now is the OEM cooler. Absolutely minimum requirement is for the replacement to DROP right in and look correct. So what is the hot set up these days for the older CIS cars? HAs the market moved away from making NEW things for the CIS- I see some have tossed out CIS / CDI and updated the fuel and ignition systems. I wont be doing that. I have been reading the threads. I understand the long neck requires the removal of the secondary intake and replaces with BOV....unless there is compelling reason there as well.....I would like to leave that all in place. Objective- safely enjoy the power of the car without fear of destroying it. (While I have heard from some very reputable people about what happened to the car, it did not belong to me at the time, and recognizing that the details of the IC and other performance parts may or may not be true...I will spare soiling someone's reputation. However, I can't count the amount of times I have heard of shops deliberately try not to return good parts to the owner, swapping out parts without owners consent, and as in this case stealing....I know I will be vigilante in the future. Maybe its a NY thing! I hope so..) |

Nice car! Seems like the ac (no condenser on the tail) is gone, so a long neck should not be a problem. Several nice options out there. I'm in Jersey(Central) too, so hopefully we'll run into each other this summer.

I hope so. May a caffeine and carburetor morning sometime.
I am thinking of using Brians ( Rarely8) cause he seems like a genuine dude on the forum...While I like the Fabspeed product and have a bunch of it already...I can see spending 800 more for the look- its basically 50% more.... I am gonna go long neck. Seems like an easy convert back and forth. |

I have a Turbokraft long neck IC and the fit and finish is on point. I used Rarlyl8's headers and exhaust and they too are gorgeous. Both provide excellent customer support, including installation help and both products deliver on their performance claims, so you cant go wrong with either company. Both provide bolt on installations, so you can keep the original parts in a box and go back to stock if you ever sell if you want, but since you are already a 3.4L, I guess the days of bone stock are gone for you...
Where in NJ are you? I'm in Morris county. Happy to meet you and show you my setup if you want to see it. A pic of mine just before I put it back in the car last year. ![]()

Throttle response and lag and consequent drivability are *dramatically improved* eliminating the crap BOV, not to mention the space liberation in the bay.
I went from short neck Garretson to long neck Bell... the difference is palpable. |

I also have the back TK long neck like Jeff's above. I chose it as it delivers the goods but keeps a relatively "period" look. I also have a Rarelyl8 muffler but with B&B headers with heat (both well designed). You may also want to look into light weight pressure plate/clutch to help engine rev easier. I'd agree with Jeff that going back to bone is easy with bolt ons. That is of course in the relative scheme of things. You already have 6 too many spark plugs…go for it!

we have a winner
Awesome Jeff- thanks. It would be great to see the car. I am in USR...so its not far.
I decided to go with Fabspeed. I have the headers, dual exhaust and airbox from them, and my buddy works there so the service is excellent as well. I am hopping to go get it tomorrow. In the process of reading the thread by 911ST on how to improve 930 ignition Timing. Seesh that is voluminous. I really don't want to go MSD on the ignition, but I can see the advantages. What a slippery slope. So much has evolved since this car was first put together. On the one hand I want to keep it as period correct as I can to the Peter Dawe build, but on the other I am sure he would do it differently today if he were building it. Scary stuff all this threads about detonation and blowing up the motor .... I guess I need to get the car back to him.....like when Dr. Frankenstein plays the violin for the monster in Young Frankenstein................ |
