Need new Alternator
So car died on the way home last night, alternator crapped out. Should I put in rebuilt or new? Bosch or genuine Porsche? Also should I upgrade to larger amperage? Thanks in advance.

I bought a higher amperage one off ebay last year from bnrparts Porsche 911 Alternator 1984 - 1989 High Amp 160 Amp High Output Generator. Unfortunately the link no longer works but a search will likely find it. It has worked well for a year at least.

I found a guy in Chatham NJ that rebuilds them. Old School Italian with piles of these things in his shop. Got it done in a day for far less than you can buy one. ($150 or so??)
JC Starter & Alternator in Chatham if you want to google his contact info and take a drive down there. Probably an hour drive. If you have a crazy stereo, or some other need for more amps, JFairman has recommended one in the past with additional capacity. |
I went with the one JFairman had recommended. For the price and the additional amperage you can't go wrong.

How do you know that it's the alternator that crapped out? Possibly (and hopefully) more likely just the voltage regulator.

It is a most excellent alternator... nothing else even comes close.
Frank "xbmwguy" found it on ebay and when he got one I wanted one too. If headlights are on and you have extra AC condensor fans running and killer stereo with lots of bass happening you need this alternator. It always shows a healthy charge happening... even at idle with all the stuff running. They are built on Valeo 90 amp alternator frames and the guts, wiring, and voltage regulator are all bigger, better, and new. |
