if you have any kind of miles on the car you should see wear grooves in the bolts from the pin, at least I did.
when I did my test it did not suck a lot but it should empty the jar.

There should be some wear marks where the drive pin is contacting with the bolt heads - even slight marks after very short use. Or if still in doubt, some engine blue on the pins should show you where they are contacting. I would still be surprised if they weren't contacting, but ... if it works fine now....

Alan, as I recall from the teardown, the cap bolts hardly showed any wear, and that was after years of driving. However, the pin was worn on one side of ONLY one arm for some reason. Anyway, after I added the washers, I pulled the cap of the pump and turned the gears to make sure the cross pin was hitting the cap bolts.
