Engine case alloy
Does anybody know what alloy the 930 engine cases were cast from and what heat treating they received?
I do not know if there was a change over the years, but I am looking for info on early 3.3 cases (1978). |

I believe they're aluminum.

What he's asking is which alloy and heat treat of aluminum. IE t-6, 5053, 6061,2024, etc. It seems in my opinion to behave like t-6 but honestly not sure.

The alloy would most likely be A356, heat treated to either T5 or T6 condition.

Ah, makes sense now. Clearly I'm not the one to be answering that or any metallurgy questions.
Back to my corner I go.

If you do any fab work and plan on getting the parts anodized after it's important to know which rod to use with which material if you dont the part and the weld will be different colors.

Just trying to find out what the shear strength of the case material is, so I can figure out what the max torque would be for head studs, before the threads pull out of the case.
