Oil line/new headers interference - need special line?
 

I'm installing a set of RarlyL8 headers on my 930 and ran into a problem. The hard oil line that runs across the rear of the engine fouls the headers.

The line can't be moved more than a few mm up or down so that doesn't solve the problem. Here's a couple of pics:

Any ideas how to solve the interference?

Is it normal to have to put in a custom line? If so, anyone now the fitting sizes? I can get to Summit tomorrow and buy some hose ends if they have them.

You ll need to change a few oil lines to fit with your new headers.. nothing really special, just a backdate to a previous year set up

I had the same issue with my rarlyl8 headers and called Brian about it and he basically said that if I loosen everything and move it around I could get it to work. It was tight, but he was right.

I loosened nut on the oil tube where it goes into the engine and rotated the tube so where it goes across above the headers was moved up, and then moved the clamp that attaches to the cam chain cover bolt and holds the tube in place over one bolt to the left. I extended the clamp length so that the tube now crosses just a hair below the original bolt that the clamp was attached to, so it is a good bit higher than it was. The top of the tube basically rests against the motor, but it isn't pressed hard against it or bending the oil tube. See pic below.

That, along with loosening the header and reattaching in a different order made it work even though I thought, like you do, that it would never fit.

I also encountered this problem. The backdate is the best solution. I did not like the oil line so close to the exhaust pipe. I went with the Braided line from the block.

^^^ Agree with that. Introducing any unnecessary extra heat to the oil is bad.

If you go the back date route, I have a brand new, never mounted, purchased from Pelican 930-107-729-10 you can buy for $70 shipped to CONUS (they're right at a hundred here).

Doesn't this make the Hose that runs forward from this to the Thermostat a bit out of alignment?

Do you have options Len? Maybe a replacement tube that bends around the bottom of the motor and above the exhaust, but ends up in the same place?

Success! I loosened the fitting on the LHS of the crankcase and was able to move the oil line. I fabricated a strap with holes 3/4" apart and relocated the Adel clamp one stud further to the left on the RHS chain housing a la Jeff NJ's picture.

I have about 1/8" space between the oil line and both the exhaust and the block. I'll keep an eye on it and if I see it beating itself on either I'll replace with either the backdated line or I'll make up some custom line.

Nice! I remember when Rarlyl8 told me it would work with some adjustments, I was looking at my oil line blocking the exhaust just like yours and I thought there was no way it would fit. I humored him and myself by trying what I thought was a futile exercise, but gladly he knows much more than I do about his stuff. LOL.
I have about the same spacing between the exhaust and oil line as you do and as long as the oil line isn't touching the exhaust, I am sure that isn't going to overheat it. Radiation vs. conduction and all that...

Well, obviously I am very used to dealing with a large pipe, but dealing with one pipe touching another is not something where I have anywhere near the experience that you do.SmileWavy

I have a way of connecting hoses to almost any point on a hardline, but the 30mm Hardware still takes up a lot of room. I have a stock 86 930 here, I will try to take some measurements.

Which reminds me I should get back w Brian (RarlyL8) about my headers w heat I ordered ages ago.
