a930pilot 01-28-2017 05:24 PM

Mark, I loved my 951 and THAT one looks great!!!

mark houghton 01-28-2017 05:25 PM

All right dude, a new horse in the stable! Looks nice, I don't care it it's not a 930. 951's were good machines. More picts, and more impressions. My girl is still sleeping, sipping on 12V cocktails during the winter hiatus.

speednme1 01-28-2017 05:55 PM

Very nice!

JFairman 01-28-2017 06:30 PM

Nice looking car!
I've read how they handle incredibly well with near 50/50 weight distribution.
Approximately what does one that nice go for?

slow&rusty 01-28-2017 06:38 PM

Congrats!! That is a beautiful car.

I just bought one too! As soon as I got it, I tore it apart to do the following:
1) New Laso water pump
2) Timing Belt
3) Balance shaft Belt
4) Power steering Belt
5) Alternator belt
6) Crank seal
7) 2 x Balance shaft seals
8) Camshaft seal with new cheesehead bolt
9) Silicone hose kit from Lindsey Racing
10) Adjustable cam pulley from Lindsey Racing
11) Lindsey Racing billet aluminum pulleys
12) New OEM expansion coolant tank
13) New intercooler hard pipes that I polished
14) NGK plugs
15) Clewitt 8mm plug wires
16) Bosch distributor cap and rotor
17) Replaced starter with a reman. Bosch
18) Replace both reference sensors
19) New auxiliary water pump
20 Replaced vacuum lines
21) Odyssey PC680 battery with alumin. mount made at home
22) Powder coated quite a few parts
23) K&N cone filter
24) Replaced many of the original fasteners
25) Lots and lots of cleaning and de-greasing

Ironically, I just fired it up tonight and it was great to hear it purr!

brasch 01-28-2017 06:48 PM

It just rolled off the transport truck this morning, bought it from a really stand up guy from over on Rennlist. Paid 13k, and so far I think that was a fair deal.

Took a bit to get it cleaned up after the truck ride, then checked all the vitals and took her out, to shake the cob webs out. Pretty nice balance, acceptable performance for an essentially stock 951 {been chipped that's all}.

Needs bigger sways, cat removal to start with...I'm sure the slope is just as slippery with these as it is with a 930.

Don't think I'll slam it like I did to my 930...but don't hold me to that.

Anybody in the market for a real low mile, perfect mechanical condition Infinity G37S coupe??

When was the T-Belt done last?

smurfbus 01-29-2017 03:39 AM

Have you guys installed beefier rear axles? My coworker has one and he said the rear axles are really weak.

All services for everything important has been done within the last 3K-ish miles. Brakes and fluids less than 5K, oil new, blah, blah, blah.

Just put it up in the air and did a thorough once over, found nothing alarming. Fixed a couple of minor electrical items, adjusted a couple of items and noted that the clutch master cylinder has a slight weep...that's it.

So now to drive it a bunch and see what there is to see.

I think everybody with an air cooled P car should get a Wasser pumper too....but what do I know.

rufrob 01-29-2017 10:09 PM

reading this is making it harder to sell my 951. My 2nd a 88-951. Now I have an 86-951 which is at the last stages of restoration. Paint, seats, dash, just installed a MBC. The 951 is a reliable, economical, and versatile car. At this point I would rank them 930, 951, 996tt. Honestly.
Now I have a chance to get 2 928S4 parts cars to build 1. Too many cars. Parking fees alone are stupid here.

I bet that catches most people off guard. Getting smoked by a older 944 in your New Camaro, Mustang or Whatever...

Redandbloodyknees takes them like vitamins, Mark. Don't do that! Hence, one of the bisch's problems...

Very nice, 951 is a helluva car. Not maintenance-friendly (clutch job is awful), but oh so good in every other way.

full quack 01-30-2017 09:52 AM

Like for all of us, age is marching forward at a relentless speed. Proof of that is in what follows...

This car is now my daily driver, and a direct replacement for the '08 G37S coupe I bought in a moment of udder stupefied-retarded-rationalized thinking, telling myself that it was a good alternative for my 930 as a daily driver.

Further rationalization was that the 930 is just too low and worth too much money, to risk it anymore just to go to the office. Too many cell phone users/texting/idiots out there these days.

So in a moment of lucidity, my mind flashed on a 951 as a better daily choice. Sure it's not a 930, but it is fun, it is a real car made of steel, held together with bolts {not plastic parts with plastic push-pins for connectors} and it is cool .

So here it is, and the G is up for sale. Some young "tuner" type will be thrilled to own it, and I'll be thrilled to be rid of it.

So back to Raw's comment....we'll see.... I'm not promising that I have any ability to not grab a sled and start down that slippery slope, but I'm presently resisting.

But like the line from an old show goes...."Resistance is futile".....:}

that is why I got the 928 about 8 yrs ago, semi daily driver since then. F150 4X4 when needed.

the 951 is street legal but a bit harsh on the street, built for DE, fast and fun.

enjoy.

Jbrowns son here, it smokes a lot more then just your mustangs and Camaros. Most people have no idea what they are looking at also lol

I just did my first timing belt on a 951, and I've done tons of these timing belts on various cars over the years, this is by far the most challenging to date coupled with the balance shaft belt..wow!

Yup, when I used to build those into 2.8L engines with the usual upgrades, we'd routinely smoke 1st-gen Vipers. Very satisfying crushing someone's 8.0L V-10 dreams with a little ol' 4-banger. 3.0L engines were even more outrageous.
A lot of car for the money.
And simply timeless design, looks that really stand out even today IMO.

Have you done a tbelt on a Ferrari or Lancia? They take PITA to another level.

Clutch in a Lancia as a teenager, so of course it seemed like fun at the time...

Major service on a Testarossa. Awful. Basically unbolt the back half of the car and separate into 2 pieces. Clutch on a 348 wasn't so bad, but I imaging belts would be a major PITA.

Nope! We all know that the REAL Italian performance cars have engines driven with a timing chain!

rufrob 01-31-2017 04:57 PM

The delta Integrale I didn't know I had to drop the transfer case first. I did it outside with floor jacks and hand tools. Not fun.
