1989 930 Rear End Whine

The rear end sounds like a typical worn R&P....whines under load, quiet otherwise, mostly noticeable in 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Ive put very few miles on the car and it was evident when I took delivery. The entire powertrain was disassembled and gone thru less than 2K miles ago by the prior owner (have receipts), mostly due to it sitting. Its a low milage car...28K total.

Im starting to drive it more and want to take care of the noise. The trans is perfect. From what I have read, the R&P may not have been set right or a bearing may be worn???? How big a job is this and and suggestions to source replacement gears??

Have you validated that there is sufficient lubrication?

I don't have a 911, but my 951 makes some noise up in 4th and 5th, I give it gas it whines, let off it gets quiet, a nice gent on the 944 site says my issue is carrier bearings, I did a gear oil change on mine, and its quieted id down a little. Your issue might be expensive from what you said. Just a guess. good luck!

I had an engine out service done shortly after I got the car....mostly to address an oil leak(s), adjust valves, and verify correct setup...but I also asked them to check the trans oil since I wasn't able to get the fill plug out. Maybe it wasn't done.

Ill get it up in the air and double check. I will assume that the R&P and or the carrier bearing is an engine out job??? GC

I don't have any personal experience with the g50 gearbox that is in 1989s, butt have read here that they are known for making whining noises. You could try contacting Matt Monson of Guard Transmission and asking him about it (he's a very approachable, good guy that participates in the fourms) - Guard Transmission |

i would verify its not wheel bearings with 28k on it otherwise I think I would just drive it unless it is really loud

What do your receipts show for parts, labor related to the g'box?

I'm going to take it in for an opinion. Not sure on the teardown on the G50....dont think that it was broken out specifically. The total was about $27K though and done about 5 years ago. Thanks for all of your input...will update with news.
