Flame out wastegate normal?

Hey guys- I was at a track event last Thursday and a few told me they could see a 'fireball' coming out the waste-gate. Although they thought this was cool, I wondered if it was abnormal. It was during deceleration only. My AFR's were about 16-18 at the time. It would come out the exhaust (zork tube only) too.

Is this normal, or is something wrong with the waste-gate?

Your wastegate should be closed during deceleration.

does the WG empty next to the zork?

WG control line should goto manifold. if it is connected to the IC or above the TB then it would open when letting off the gas.

Right. I was wondering if there was an unusual scenario that would cause it to pop open under decel. I had the MBC turned all the way down (.3 bar) and I didn't notice any overboosting or lack of boost anywhere. Just seemed odd.

No, it opens out right after the WG (using the short 'screamer pipe'.)

I'll check the connection again, if I recall the boost signal comes from a tap on the charge pipe just before the IC. So that could cause it to act like a BOV? That won't harm anything will it? Do I need to re-do the plumbing and find a spot on the manifold?

This is the correct method of hooking the plumbing up. The wastegate will not operate like a BOV in any configuration (unless the spring was broken) as the spring tension holds the valve shut until boost pressure overcomes that tension and opens the valve. If you are using a MBC, the line from the MBC should go to the bottom of the can of the WG and the top of the can should be open to atmospheric pressure.

Was the fireball quick or prolonged?
If the waste gate boost signal is taken from the intercooler (like OEM) then the waste gate will see boost spikes during snap shut throttle events. Those boost spikes will allow the waste gate to remain open for a microsecond until the recirculation valve opens and relieves the pressure above the throttle plate. This could allow a quick fireball out the waste gate pipe.

Yes, quick fireball. What you describe sounds like what it's doing. This was at the track going from high RPM to hard braking.

my mistake.
I was thinking of the BOV.!!!
my BOV is connected to the T on the TB'
yes, WG to IC
that will make it open when throttle is closed.

sorry for the brain fart
