half-shaft install - the EZ way

This makes it easier and keeps the gaskets in place and free of grease. Hold your CV's together with a wire around a couple of the bolts. like this. make a couple guide pins a little longer than the bolt length, cut a screwdriver slot in the end slide the CV's over the guide pins and get a couple bolts started into the flange, remove the bolts that the wire is around. remove the wires and guide pins, install all the bolts.

Great tip! Also, plug bolt holes with paper towel on CV joints while packing. Saves time cleaning up.

" My G-50/50 axles have cups on both ends of the half shafts... no grease for me" The moon caps from the later CV's will fit the early ones with a little persuasion. I put them on the t'axle end of my '79 shafts. It makes for a much cleaner job when dropping the engine. I run a small bead of RTV around the flange ID of the cap before installing on the CV, it seals the cap and holds it on to the CV if you have to disconnect the shaft.

I have to put the pass. side shaft on yet so no operating experience. But from just looking at them I like them better than the original style, they have more pleats and are more flexible so I think they'll last longer. One little issue, at least on mine, the ID of the boot big end was a little larger than the flange on my CV's, maybe 1/8". I ran a little RTV around the flange and used a heavy duty 1/4" wide zip tie and tightened the p%$ out of it and it clamped it right down. Another thing on these CV's, throw those pos original retaining rings without ears in the hopper and get four 1 1/6" ID external snap rings. At least that was the size for my '79 shafts.

they make a clamp for that. the zip tie may break. I got the crimp for them from advance for about $10, I think they sell it on here for over 100, gotta pay for those 962's I guess.

Last time I put everything together dry and squeezed grease in with a syringe through the outer opening. It took me like 20 min of squeezing a syringe to get sufficent grease through a large gauge needle. I will definitely get the caps next time.

They req'd a bit of "massaging" with a body hammer on an anvil for my CV's. The earlier flanges have a little different relief where the caps fit into and there is a little interference until the caps are beaten into submission.
