Factory heat shield - bumper???
Guys,
I noticed that my factory heat shield is rotted! The damn thing is nearly gone, which is a little strange as the rest of the car is in good shape. Any ideas? Where can I get an economical replacement? I will then get it coated, most likely by Swain Tech who have done my pistons. Any ideas or feedback on this? Regards, Chris |

yea that happens. turbo heat
check the body lip around the engine where the engine seal attaches. I bet that is gone or going where the turbo is. if not, get in there are coat it to protect it. also make sure that seal is good. the engine compartment needs to be sealed so hot air is not pulled up from below and air is not pulled in from the engine lid bypassing the IC.

The heat shield is still available from Porsche. Not cheap, but nothing ever is for these Turbos... Anyway, we found it more practical to purchase a new heat shield rather than spend hours reproducing it. Having bends in both directions was going to make that a challenge. The new factory part lined up perfectly at all mounting holes.
Order new hardware while you're at it. If you have to unbolt the valence from the bumper while you're doing all this, chances are the fasteners holding it on are in bad shape, and the seal between them is roasted and brittle. Also check the heat shield below the center reflector, consider having it coated as well.

You can get the big machine thread phillips from a good hardware store - much cheaper than anywhere else. They are a funky size.

I made up a proper heat shield that fits below the factory one . Made it from a sandwich of very thin aluminium sheet and a nomex? sheet in between. Pop rivet the 3 together.

I picked up a factory heat shield from eBay...perfect fit. Had get all new fasteners and such. Seems to have made a difference as I was noticing paint discoloration on the bumper in way of the turbo.

y'all reminded me I have to reinstall my heat shield. I dont think I saved the hardware, is there something peculiar about it or is it standard metric/phillips?
