89 Carrera reseal and top end
My brother trusted his years of ownership of the gorgeous 89 Carrera to me. It arrived on truck Wednesday night, so I drove it on Thursday, just to get my opinion.
I put it in the garage and it marked its spot. Now, his twin, also a P car lover, favorite quote is, “if there is oil in it, there is oil on it” So, I’m going to do a top end and a center case reseal. The motor is actually an 88 cab motor with 100k on it now, that’s a different story. Thanks for watching Bruce http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1537662351.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1537662446.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1537662579.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1537662644.jpg |
And more grease and oil
|
Saturday night fun
|
Nice, ill be watching....
|
Do have a parts list?
I will be doing the same soon. |
Excellent. I love watching this kind of work. Nice to see you posting about it Bruce. Cheers. Michael
|
what did you use to clean your transmission?
|
At this point, it just safety-Kleen and the brush.
Later it will be sams club degreaser sprayed on, then power washed a couple times while on an engine stand Bruce |
I used simple green, soaked it for a couple of days on a pallet. Wire brush a few times while it soaked, then the power washer. Took about five minutes to clean the transmission with the power washer, another half an hour to clean the driveway with the power washer..... Mine was pretty bad. The most important tip is to cover your self head to toe in what clothes you will be ok with throwing out!
Really looking forward to this build, in the midst of doing the same. Just don't know what to do with the case and bearings, everything looks good. But,I have no history of the motor. I've been cleaning carbon off pistons and cylinders for two weeks, not even done.... |
Top end
I’ve got to hand it to being a Colorado car, all the bolts on the exhaust came off except one and I hit that with the little snap on impact and it broke at the cross over.
Anyway, tomorrow is cleanup and getting parts off the floor before I pull the heads. Thanks for checking Bruce http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1537745966.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1537746016.jpg |
Monday for several hours
The motor has never been opened before, the rockers have only one wear spot.
The cam carrier was very loose to the heads, most of the nuts were not seated. , but 100k miles different things get loose and others get tight. The head studs needed a breaker bar on the long half inch ratchet to bang loose, especially on the dilivars. Bruce http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1537828137.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1537828182.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1537828278.jpg |
The head studs look a lot better than mine did, none broken? I had three broken, and I snapped two more off with my hands. Are you going to replace them?
|
It’s a street car so standard steel will work
So far the biggest surprise has been the lack of snugness of the cam carrier nuts Bruce |
If you are going all the way with this and splitting the case, there are tons of while you are in there options. At a min I would replace bearings and rings in addition to top end rebuild.
|
Bearings are good, oil pressure not a problem.
It’s a whole other ball park if I open the case and have major scratches on the bearings. I don’t rering an old bottom end because the valve job will increase compression New intermediate shaft bearings, chain rails, and a reseal on a clean case is all required here. Bruce |
Friday. I pulled P&Cs and perimeter nuts and through bots
Lots of oil ow on the case. I guess it’s there to protect the aluminum http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1538225176.jpg |
Cleaning parts
I found under the old oil a real heavy coating of cosmolene.
Some time in the Safety Kleen then degreaser sprayed on and to The power washer The hanks for looking Bruce http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1538267819.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1538267908.jpg |
Glad to be able to view another of your builds :)
|
ARP or OEM headstuds?
|
This is a street car so it gets steel
The only other option for my builds is supertec with the fine threaded ends ARP is never a consideration. Bruce |
Afternoon cleaning parts
Spent the afternoon cleaning some more parts
Aluminum sure is pretty with the cosmoline and old oil remover http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1538441416.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1538441549.jpg |
More pictures as I move along
Waiting on parts but there is lots in the drawer so I was digging to get something done
The only thing I didn’t have was a set of new rails As always, thanks for looking Bruce http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1538523806.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1538523857.jpg |
Looking good Bruce!!!
|
De greasing the G50
Well, it’s been hanging on the chain since I took it out of the safety Kleen
Moved the 85 out and backed the truck in Sprayed degreaser and power washed a couple times. But I got most grease And cosmolene off Now to change the gear oil Brkucehttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1538524417.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1538524483.jpg |
Could you post a picture of your main bearings, and an assessment of them? I'm looking at mine trying to figure out what to do.... I've got a few scratches, but, man they look good....
|
The bearings were completely without scratches or stain spots. I didn’t take pictures
and the im closed up now It’s really your call, does your crank have grooves? Bruce |
Busy busy Ike in garage
Got outside early and started projecting
Slipped the pistons in the cylinders and installed on the short block Yes had enough rocker shaft seals to do eleven of twelve shafts Cylinder dividers have cosmolene but not rust JB weld on old leaks and potential ones Bruce http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1538597729.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1538597808.jpg |
Chains stretch. I would replace them. Triple check the seals on the oil pump are in place.
did you de glaze the cylinders before putting the pistons back in? Chris |
There was lots of room on the idlers and tensioner, chains are good
I use aviation permatex and stick the seals on the pump and case Been there a couple times over the decades I scotch brite the cylinders with a cylinder hone use trans oil to lube the rings and cylinders Bruce |
Heads back
Got the heads back from the machinist last evening
Going to be hot today so morning gets stuff done Got heads, cams,.carriers. And rockers together http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1538762179.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1538762275.jpg |
It sure is enjoyable following along with a thread like this. Rebuilding my SC engine, which I acquired disassembled, was one of my most satisfying accomplishments (thus far). Cleanliness is next to Godliness, and I enjoy scrubbing and prepping parts, or at least that's how I remember it. Rose colored glasses? Thanks for taking the time and effort to post this Bruce. Best, John

The best thing I can do is to have the owner informed about what he owns and what he has purchased. Stopping at a top end and leaving all the crud because you’re doing the top end, I’ve seen shops do exactly that.
Bottom end gasket set, chain rails, and intermediate shaft bearings are inexpensive, consumable items. I’m not so into imitated by the motor that I can’t clean and inspect and reseal the bottom end. He was told that there can be more expenses if the bottom bearings are worn and need replacing I know this motor as I delivered it to my brother with 40K on it after take by it out of the wreck about 2002 and shipped to him to install to replace the bad leak down he owned Now Years later he wants a top end before age slows me too much Cars been turn key for 16 years, lately marking its spot, going to be resolved. You're wrong because you're taking the top and bottom terms too literally. And don't equate this 3.2 engine service with what a magnesium case would need. Splitting this case doesn't prompt the necessity for all sorts of other activities like align boring the mains, decking the cylinder spigots, cutting the parting line and boring back to standard, shuffle pins, etc. etc. blah blah blah typical machining needs of a magnesium case. Those mag cases are dimensionally challenged/unstable due to the material aging properties of magnesium. Once you unbolt them, you're pretty much guaranteed you have to machine them to get everything lined up again. Whereas with the later aluminum cases like the 3.2 case, they maintain their shape upon disassembly and can reliably be bolted back together with no machining required whatsoever.
Splitting the case here doesn't instantly trigger a true "bottom end" if he just wants to inspect the bearings, install new oil pump seals (originals are orange or brown silicone and are brittle by now) and re-seal the case parting line. A true bottom end job, regardless of what case type we're talking about, is when you've got pistons & cylinders out of spec, rods needing re-sizing, crank needs work, bearings replaced, etc. He's doing the right thing eliminating the lower dilivar studs as well. Nothing wrong with reusing the bearings if they look good. If they still look good with no scratches or swipes on them? Then they're going to measure good. Just button it back up and keep on driving. Some argue that splitting the case and rods compromises the designed bearing "crush" that occurs when the parts joined at the split lines. But many have reused bearings for years and years with no ill effects. |
UPS arrived in the hurricane
And brought me the care package for the Carrera mi
Thought the package was too small but it was all there Bottom studs were first than the heads followed. Hoping for a good tomorrow Bruce Mmm photos on square http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1539305300.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1539305346.jpg |
Chains alignment good
And the cams came .02mm apart
Tomorrow to check cam oil line flow Bruce http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1539390534.jpg |
I really enjoy watching the progress. Thanks for sharing Bruce.

Saturday getting it together
Michael, thanks for the comments so here is the eye candy for Saturday

Can you share which oil lines and fuel hoses you replaced?
|
I replaced the main pressure lines under the injection and all oil lines under RR
Wheel house which were all 30 years old Changed out the cam oil lines and installed modified cam oil line restrictors Bruce |
