Recommendations for head gaskets
Hi had an engine rebuild 2 years ago and it appears that the head gasket rings have failed on two cylinders and are beginning to fail on two others. I used Elring two years ago - did I get a bad batch or are there issues with this brand? Does anyone have any recommendations for gaskets that are better than Elring?

I would need a LOT more detailed information in order to tell you whether you have a gasket issue or something else at fault here. ![]() ![]() Generally speaking, Elring stuff isn't great IMHO so I try to avoid using that brand when I have alternatives. The key thing to remember though is that the heads must be flat & true and the correct head studs must be installed to maintain proper clamping forces through the engine's temperature range.

Good morning Mr. Weiner, hope all is well up there in Oregon.
Like you suggest, all parts need to be checked to ensure that the assembly is correct. Too many variables in play here. To the original post, it starts with the cylinder deck surfaces. Then the cylinder heights, the head heights and the cam deck surfaces. Add in as Steve suggests, (he is a very wise man of great experience), the head studs used, the threaded bores in the case, and the washer platforms in the heads. Everything needs to be checked, measured and nothing taken for granted. If any of the above parts are not right, nothing will work. You can be assured that the gaskets do work as many other engines have used these and not had this problem. They may not be the best quality, but they do work. Start with the basics and work up from there. |

Hi - thank for your replies - the engine is apart and is being checked by local engineers to ensure all correct before rebuilding. New studs ordered as well as new nuts etc., Reinz gasket set being used. Bentley manual being followed by chief engineer to ensure tolerances and torque settings are correct. All was well for two years, 1500 miles covered before this issue - thought it was an exhaust issue at first but leak test showed problems with cylinders 1 and 6 - hence, engine out and checking all-round.
