How bad did my day just get?

Long story short, bought a car that hasn’t ran in a while and in the midst of doing a bunch of stuff to get it ready to start I decided to swap the HE and muffler for a set of SSIs and an M&K SS muffler. Got all the exhaust nuts off with relative ease and no snapped studs but I found this on the exhaust port of cylinder 6...

What am I in for? Found some previous threads saying “fire it up and check again in a couple hundred miles”, is that a solid strategy or...?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1541207460.jpg

Have someone turn over the engine with a wrench as u or someone who knows what should happen with that valve watch’s and hopefully the valve moves in and out without any binding.
Also try to wiggle the valve stem to see if the valve guide is worn...
Post here what u find and we all can help further ...

I did make mental note of the valves location within the head and then manually turned the motor over and it did in fact move, but being solo I wasn’t able to watch it. Sadly car is not at the house so getting my wife to come across town for a 30s job isn’t likely. Will try to wiggle in the AM and report back.

Forgot to mention in my first post that the motor does turn over by hand with relative ease.

If you had not seen that you would have started it and ran it. I say start it and run it. If the valve is good, great. If not it is the same work to take it apart now as before you started it and ran it. No loss to try and a lot to gain.

Don' t try to start it also looks like some water at the base of the valve !

it's collected condensation or got rain in it. it if rotates then it's not locked up full of water. As nasty as that looks it might just need to be run good and hard and blow all that crap out the tail pipe. with all the oil every where you might also want to check head studs ok etc.

It looks like there is evidence of some significant oil leak as well. Are you concerned about that? Clean the motor up, change the oil. Start it up and see what you have.

Ive done, or have the parts, to basically do everything that doesn’t involve dropping motor. Already did the triangle, installed an oil catch can (PO just let the vent hose hang out after swapping to carbs, new VC (already had turbo covers) and sump plate gaskets, oil tubes on R side, and all new hoses and lines. I’m taking the proactive approach of just doing it all while I’m down there because I don’t really have a way to pinpoint the leaks. I think the S-hose and vent hose are the big culprits and since we’re just getting into the crappy weather here in Pittsburgh there isn’t much incentive to hurry and get things done to drive it.

Edit- I also don’t think I mentioned this but car has a 2.7.

Recently bought another USB endoscope/borescope, because first one got mislaid.

I need to reset sensor clearance - turning motor over until parts you can't see from the fan end of the car move into correct alignment. Time-consuming to do solo, just because of sliding back under the car to see where things are at.

For $10, the tool is kind of a no-brainer if you already have something to display it on..

Good luck!

Bare endoscopes for use with a laptop or tablet are unbelievably inexpensive. Can be as long as you need, but the cable to the screen device will give you the length you need. They typically are pretty flexible, so you will want to rig up a holder of some sort so you can point it where you want to look hands free.
