89 Carrera reseal and top end

My brother trusted his years of ownership of the gorgeous 89 Carrera to me. It arrived on truck Wednesday night, so I drove it on Thursday, just to get my opinion.
I put it in the garage and it marked its spot.
Now, his twin, also a P car lover, favorite quote is, “if there is oil in it, there is oil on it”
So, I’m going to do a top end and a center case reseal.
The motor is actually an 88 cab motor with 100k on it now, that’s a different story.
Thanks for watching
Bruce

At this point, it just safety-Kleen and the brush.
Later it will be sams club degreaser sprayed on, then power washed a couple times while on an engine stand

I used simple green, soaked it for a couple of days on a pallet. Wire brush a few times while it soaked, then the power washer. Took about five minutes to clean the transmission with the power washer, another half an hour to clean the driveway with the power washer..... Mine was pretty bad. The most important tip is to cover your self head to toe in what clothes you will be ok with throwing out!
Really looking forward to this build, in the midst of doing the same. Just don't know what to do with the case and bearings, everything looks good. But,I have no history of the motor. I've been cleaning carbon off pistons and cylinders for two weeks, not even done....

Top end

I’ve got to hand it to being a Colorado car, all the bolts on the exhaust came off except one and I hit that with the little snap on impact and it broke at the cross over.
Anyway, tomorrow is cleanup and getting parts off the floor before I pull the heads.
Thanks for checking
Bruce

Monday for several hours

The motor has never been opened before, the rockers have only one wear spot.
The cam carrier was very loose to the heads, most of the nuts were not seated.
, but 100k miles different things get loose and others get tight.
The head studs needed a breaker bar on the long half inch ratchet to bang loose, especially on the dilivars.

The head studs look a lot better than mine did, none broken? I had three broken, and I snapped two more off with my hands. Are you going to replace them?

It’s a street car so standard steel will work
So far the biggest surprise has been the lack of snugness of the cam carrier nuts

If you are going all the way with this and splitting the case, there are tons of while you are in there options. At a min I would replace bearings and rings in addition to top end rebuild.

Bearings are good, oil pressure not a problem.
It’s a whole other ball park if I open the case and have major scratches on the bearings.
I don’t rering an old bottom end because the valve job will increase compression
New intermediate shaft bearings, chain rails, and a reseal on a clean case is all required here.

Friday. I pulled P&Cs and perimeter nuts and through bots
Lots of oil ow on the case. I guess it’s there to protect the aluminum

This is a street car so it gets steel
The only other option for my builds is supertec with the fine threaded ends
ARP is never a consideration.
