Give me a Break!
 

Some fellow 'poked me in the ribs' in an email for being too pushy in promoting the new book. Here is what I responded with:

"Listen, I spent eight months writing the engine book. I work about 110 hours a week. I'm not going to sit here and write a half-hour email to you (one person) when I have already explained everything clearly in the book. I spent a long time and worked very hard to put the information into an accessible medium. There are 5-6 pages dedicated to the Porsche cases, and why I believe that time certs are not really a good solution. For more information search the forums (http://forums.pelicanparts.com). My goal is not to 'push' the book as you say, I know that it will have no problem selling well, based on the information inside. I just don't have time to repeat myself everytime someone asks me a question that has already been published in the book that they have not chosen to buy. If someone has a question on something that was left out of the book, or is confusing in the book, then I have no problem answering it. In the meantime, if the information is available in the book, then I will refer people to it, just as I refer people to Bruce Anderson's book."

In short, I spent way too much time working on the book, I'm not going to answer questions that are clearly explained in the book (preview edition available now, color version available within 30 days)...

Hope this clears it up a bit...

Phil's got it right, it's your site, it's your book promote it all you want. Personally I've bought your 101 book and love it. It's practically my main workshop manual right now and I'm axtiously awaiting your new book.

Ah fer crying out loud Wayne, maybe the feller couldn't read...although your book does have plenty of nice pictures he could've looked at to figure out his problems.

Wayne, I appreciated your response to my initial emal some months ago regarding what to look for in rebuilding my 77 Targa. I bought the book and took your advice into consideration together with all of the responses to my post here. Great book, lots of info that is worth the read and thanx to all who post on a regular basis. I have the Targa in for the work that is necessary and am looking forward to the spring when it will be back on the road. One has to help oneself too!

I agree with the others. Push it all you want. It's not like you're spamming. As a forum to enhance the information given in the book, or for small points of info, this is the place to do that. Although I sold the engine I had intended to rebuild with your book, I will find another in the future. Maybe this one will come with a car attached. Hah!

Like they say "a picture is worth a thousand words", I'm sure that will hold true in your book also.

Wayne- Thanks. There are very, very few people who have taken on the task of writing a book, particularly a technical engine rebuilding book IN ADDITION to running a business, having a personal life, etc. For decades, there has been a need for the type of book that you have created, the opportunity has been there for thousands of others to do it - - but you are the one who stepped up and met the challenge. I applaud you.

I have read just about every 911 book I can get my hands on (most of your references in the back of "101 Projects" -another book I've worn out - need to get myself a second copy of that one too) and YES - I BOUGHT THE PREVIEW EDITION some time ago and have read it completely through 3 or 4 times already, and yes many of the questions I've seen come up on this forum are covered in your book, and fairly well.

I'll read it again when I get the final version. Thanks for all your efforts, INCLUDING this fanastic WEB FORUM, - - WOW a forum for rebuilding a 911 engine.

ONE YEAR AGO - WHO (besides you) would have dreamed or envisioned all this great exchange of ideas / information about soooo many aspects of putting a 911 engine together.

Wayne - it is not pushing your book to refer someone to where they can find an answer to their question MAYBE THAT'S ONE REASON YOU TOOK 8 MONTHS TO WRITE A BOOK -- SO THERE WOULD BE SOME PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO GO TO GET AN ANSWER TO THEIR QUESTIONS, ..... and it is just plain and simple a fact of life - you, like all of us, ONLY HAVE 24 HOURS a day. I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate the time you took to respond to my one question (so far), and I'm certainly a light weight in all this stuff.

I, too, would like to say thank you. Push the book all you want (I have the preview edition; can't WAIT for the final copy!), and push Pelican as well. Maybe sometimes we take for granted what a valuable resource you provide for Porsche (and BMW) nuts. This forum is the best one I've seen of it's type, and the only one I visit regularly, every day. It's also brought a lot of like thinking individuals together, even if they've never met. We appreciate it.

One question: Do you EVER have time to sleep?

Anyone who can put togather a book on anything deserves a atta boy. Its a very big undertaking, and deserves a lot of credit.
Books are a very valualbe tool. Pushing your business is also noteworthy, as it serves a real need. KEEP IT UP and CONGRADS!!!

I have a very sceptical friend when it comes to cars. After all they just get you from point a to b.Get my drift, Anyhow as we were jumping into my 82SC he noticed the 101 book, he started thumbing threw the book and said that it seemed to be quite informative. He then said how nice it would be if he could get one so nice and colorful for his stock POS 91 rice CVIC. I had to laugh, it works for me. So promote away hope all goes well with the move Speedy1

I just got my preview copy of the book and the information is awesome. I see no reason whatsoever to not reference the book...it seems to me that's the WHOLE POINT of writing the thing.
More importantly, people need to own the book simply for an interesting read (although my girlfriend would disagree) about engines. I can't always be fiddling around with my car but I can sort of vicariously work on it reading the book.
Very well written and readable. Wayne does a better job of explaining things than a lot of other books.
Besides...you started the company (with help), you set up the FREE SITE, and you worked your ass off on the book. I say promote the heck out of it.

It's your show! As a successful business man, never get tired of promoting your show, blowing your whistle and ringing your bell. Fact is, you work over 100 hours a week(too much) for a reason...... to make money. Never feel guilty about promoting yourself, your books, your website, your ads, etc.
Since I have come to know of you, I am Impressed! You're doing an awesome job so keep it up, when you hit about 35 - 40 you'll want to slow down a bit (Yep!), so full steam ahead.

As for guys sending you eMails and then ribbing you for promoting your book, (sorry if it was you Fr*****?), but they're an idiot.
1. Don't send any emails, it's a waste of time for a guy you probably gets 100's of them.
2. Don't ask for free advise and then get wiseazzed about it!
3. Sell your car, buy a Honda :)

Hope your ribs aren't bruised, Wayne. I haven't been in the Porsche "hobby" long, but during my short time here, I have found a wealth of information on this board (I love collecting technicals references). I have both of your books and find them invaluable for a "hobbiest" like myself. I appreciate your hosting this board and offering your advise and opinions. I do not find the advertising or promotions on this board "overbearing" or "gaudy". I would hazard a guess that I am in the majority here.... any time frame for the opening of your Canadian showroom yet?
