Are piston rings for turbo same as nonturbo?

Finally have time to work on my 1987 930...

Opened the Goetze rings I got from pelican, and they are different than factory.

The old top compression ring isn't beveled, just ring #2 is.

With the pelican rings, both rings are beveled....

Is it ok?

As long as you are using Goeteze rings I wouldn’t worry about any problems

Thanks Bruce, put them in today already so glad to hear :).

This motor was previously heavily modified. Rings that came out, at least the top ring, almost look chromed... no bevel on the top ring.

Smart of you to check bpu699. Leave nothing to chance!

To answer your original question, the ring pack for NA is slightly different from Turbo. The middle ring is different in profile and width. See pic below.

Speedy, where did you find that chart? My car is a 1988 which is the 3.3. Would love to see if the top 2 rings are identical, as they sure seem to be. On a couple pistons, want to swap those two rings to get the ring gaps in the proper range...

I mic'd the new rings against the old, and the thicknesses are the same.

The only oddidity with the old rings, is that the top pressure ring is just flat. No bevel whatsoever. Not sure if that was intentional, or has some benefit on a high boost turbo?

In case this helps someone, here is the link for the full goetze catalog with pics of the rings, what they are made of, coatings, etc...

https://www.enginepartsuk.net/sites/default/files/CATGT1401.pdf

Note that on the 930 the top 2 rings are identical in size, coating, and composition.

So, for sake of getting correct gapping, the two rings can be flipped to make sure the piston gap for the lower ring is larger...

The internet is an amazing thing... truly...
