Reputable Engine Rebuilder - LA & OC Areas (CA)

Hello all - Recently picked up a 74 911s that is in need of an engine rebuild. Motor is blown due to oil starvation (from what I've gathered) I am planning on removing the engine over the winter, and disassembling to learn some things & save on labor. This is a 2.7 magnesium engine case 911 - I need a mechanic that is familiar in rebuilding these motors. I've read around on the forums and have a couple options, but doesn't hurt to post and try for more. Thanks to any advice in advance.

Marc Bixen at Redline Service West LA knows these engines well.

AASE Motors in Fullerton, CA. They have my 3.2 which is done and ready for install. My 3.2 long block was rebuilt by Bruce Abbott (terrific guy) in North Carolina (I think) back in 2014 when my car was back east. Then when my car came back to CA I took the motor and all of the rest of the parts to AASE for finish assembly and to straighten out anything so it would be ready to fire in the car. They also rebuilt Jim's (Banananose on 914World.com) engines in his two sixes and I have driven both. They run flawlessly.

Thanks for the recommendations guys! I've heard great things about AASE.

+1 Aase motors...you'll never meet a friendlier shop with an endless amount of knowledge!

Others that are well-known aircooled shops include:
Callas Rennsport
TLG
TRE

Just a heads up, but in mamy instances a shop will charge more to deal with a disassembled engine than a solid core. If they don't do the "autopsy" they will need to inspect everything you give them. Also, they may assume you are cheap because you are trying to save a few hundred bucks labor on a $10k job.

If it were my engine I would take it to TLG or Aase.

Matt makes a good point. I didnt read your post that closely. Probably best to "interview" the different shops and talk about your plans before you get too far into the "disassembly" process yourself.

And if you visit Aase Motors, make time to visit Aasco Motorsports and meet the man who started Aase Motors...Randy Aase! From those two shops, be prepared to learn...

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Matt - Great point and I didn’t really think of it that way. I want to drop the motor myself for the experience but what you said makes sense. Leaning toward AASE. I’ll call them soon or swing by. Thanks to everyone else for the recommendations.

You're welcome. Jeff and Allen are great guys. Worth the wait.

Couple of options. Use some of the recommendations listed above. Promotor Sports Tyson Schmidt is very good with these motors. He has a partner Brad, but Tyson is the "master mechanic". He has completed 2 motors in the last 6 months similar to yours for some guys I know. Could ship it up to Oregon to Steve Weiner which many have done and is a really good option. Also depending on what you want for the long term drop a 3.0 that is in good shape. BTW this is what I'm currently doing with my '74 ...... I did have a base 2.7 which is way less HP than your 2.7S motor.
