964 chain tensioners or solid for high rpm
Couldn’t find info on whether the stock 964 chain tensioners would be reliable for a higher revving 3.6/3.8 race engine with GT3 crank, etc.
Do builders use solids for this purpose or are the stock 964 tensioners adequate or is there a modification similar to the Jerry Woods for Carrera tensioners that can be used for 964 tensioners? Interested to hear your input on what tensioners are being used at the track for these 964/993 motors. Thanks. |
964
We have run hundreds of race hours on the factory 964 tensioners, we have had some that we have had to replace but never a failure

That’s good to know. Thanks Mike.

Yep, 954/993 tensioners,Bullet proof, Sam.

964 uses mechanical valve adjustment just like all previous 911 engines, the chain tensioners are just better integrated into the design then the similar 3.2 Carrera hyd tensioners.
993 uses the same tensioner design as 964 but w/ hydraulic valve adjustment, 993 Cup and RSR use stock hydraulic chain tensioners from street cars but w/ mechanical lash adjustment from the 964RSR via various thickness valve stem caps, rather than a screw adjustment as was used on the 964 street cars and most previous 911s. That said Gt3 uses hyd adjusters good to 9k, I don't know the difference from 993 other than lighter valve train |
Aew we talking chain tensioners??, either way all suggestions are good!
