chain tensioner shaft
 

Hi all,

You will have to forgive me if I'm not using the right part names.

There is a shaft that goes through the chain tensioner and is supported by the chain cover housing on one side and the chain housing on the other. Question is: Is there a plug or something that goes in the chain housing to keep this shaft from sliding out. It looks like there was something plastic there once, but now it's just an open hole.

Mike, on my covers, there is a thin metal cap in the hole. It looks kind of like a bottlecap, but without any wrinkes on the edges. I'm not sure if you can buy these - I thought they always came installed in the chain covers.

It's not the cap in the cover - I too have a metal plug there - it's the one in the housing - facing the cylinders.

That is epoxy not plastic. Bruce Anderson advises to clean it off and reapply new when doing a rebuild. I never have though...

The shaft is pressed into the chain housing (at the factory) and then the joint is sealed on the outside with epoxy as explained above by others. However if you see a "hole" and this means the shaft has come loose then the housing needs to be replaced. The new housing (or good used one) will come with the shaft pressed in place. It appears you need a new chain housing.
