73 911T camshaft housing seal repalcement
Is there any trick to replacing the camshaft housing seal,for instance how far should it be inserted? Should it go in dry? Should the cam shaft be installed before the seal is replaced? Is it a difficult seal to install, ie should I freeze it before inserting it?
The seal I am referring to is the one which is similar to the pulley seal but is located on the front left side of the engine in the camshaft housing where the camshaft pulley drives the mfi pump. I’ll try to include a picture. Have found very little info on replacing this seal. A am assuming it’ll be similar to the pulley and the rms. Was thinking trying to push or pull the old seal out,carefully, then tap the new seal in with a large socket as a driver, trying to keep the seal straight. ![]() |

I would think it more easily done as the last piece to be installed. You jam the cam into the seal, you’ll likely be replacing it after startup.

Seals in. Fair bit simpler than the crank seals. Care must be taken of course removing the old seal but was able to pry it out with a screw driver resting on a small piece of body metal to protect the aluminum housing. Put the new seal in the freezer overnight, started it square using a large socket almost the size of the opening and lightly tapped it in square. Set it to the same depth as the original, about 3/16 of an inch in. There is an oil galley port just inboard of that so you don’t want to put the seal in too far and cover that. Did this with the cam out cause it would have been very challenging to tap it in otherwise and finally found mention of it in Wayne’s book and seems to be installed with cams not yet in permanently. Heads are on the housing now, cams are in and rotating smoothly. A good afternoon.
