1983 Block Question 3.0 can it be a 3.2
I have a 3.0 motor with Engine # 64D4788 type 930/16. My mechanic is saying this is a 3.2 liter block? Does this make sense? If so does it really provide any value or make it any easier to convert to a 3.2. I'm assuming it has all 3.0 parts in it. Might be silly question but thought I'd ask.
Thanks, Joe |
You can can convert a 3.0 to a 3.2 with a 3.2 crank, rods and pistons.

Yes. I bought a very late ‘83 Targa new, was surprised when I did my 1,000 mile oil change that the case was the same as a Carrera. I was told at the time that the factory felt the tooling for the old case just wasn’t reliable enough so they made the switch before the end of the SC production run. Guts were all SC 3.0 and it didn’t have the Carrera updated tensioners, just the case halves.

Any surprize?
VW and Porsche has a history of using up old/new stock. You see this most often with last years parts on the next years models. |

930/16 is an SC. Not sure where the Carrera reference comes from. Some 3.0 have been made into 3.2 shot stroke engines. Same crank.

Search 3.2 short stroke.

Carrera reference comes from the 3.2 Carrera which most recognize the case as being a "3.2 case"
To convert the engine to a 3.2L displacement, you can simply get 98mm pistons and cylinders and that gets you the 3.2 short stroke James mentions. Original piston sizes are 95mm. So you don't need to change out the 3.0 crank and rods to get a 3.2 Here's the TSB describing when the revised engine case came along http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1549050984.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1549050993.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1549051036.jpg |
I am curious - do these engines (3.2 SS) have any known issues?
|
Nope no inherent issues. A local friend ran a 3.3L short stroke (SC engine case, crank and rods with 100mm pistons) for nearly 10 years in his racecar and it was very reliable. Made 248 wheel horsepower on the dyno every year. Only one issue with it was a setup error causing it to be overrevved too frequently (digital dash setup was not right and didn't have the tach feature properly calibrated) and bent a rod
