66 911 with 80,000 original miles. The car has not been started since 1982. Whats the best course of action to get it running.

Search the tech forum and you'll find lots of threads.

Did they drain the tank or is it full of gas?

Vital Signs 01-24-2019 02:35 PM

I drained the tank a few years ago and had it cleaned and coated the inside with oil. The fuel lines and carbs were never drained. I guessing that the lines and carbs will have to be rebuilt. Just wondering if starting the engine will damage it after sitting for so long.

I would think a good thing to do is to assume the carbs, fuel filters, and fuel lines are compromised with evaporated fuel. Maybe even the fuel pump.

Certainly drain the oil and refill and change the filter

Pull the plugs and look inside with a borescope. Look for corrosion.

Change the transmission fluid too

Change plugs and distributor rotor and cap.

Pull the vavle covers and do a thourough inspection. Look for corrosion and anything that might make you think the rockers and valves are stuck.

Can you rotate the crankshaft via the nut on the fan? Does it turn relatively freely with the plugs out?

Probably could remove the sump plate and look inside the engine.

I had a similar project , a '66 with 60,000 miles . I could not rotate the engine because of a pile of carbon between a piston and cylinder head . Also , the cylinders were rusty and needed some honing , and a connecting rod had a loose wrist pin bushing - a common problem on early engines - so the engine came apart . Of course it needed a valve job because of the worn copper valve guides . I believe you will have some of the same issues .
