Need to replace timing chain
I am new to the forum and to the Porsche world.
This is a 1974 911S 2.7L. I took it to the shop to do a "top end" rebuild, as one cylinder was damaged and a valve was bent. Everything looks good on the "bottom end" of the engine, but the shop is recommending to change the timing chain because it has a "clip" and is not original. Although the chain is a good shape, is it necessary to change it just because of the "clip"? thanks. |

The clip allows the chain to be replaced WITHOUT opening or splitting the cases. Once the case is apart, it is an entire rebuild. I am not aware of the clipped chains causing any trouble.
IMO, if the chain is not worn, (you can tell by the length), and the sprockets are not worn, I would leave it. Unless of course you want an entire rebuild. Be warned, splitting the case on that motor will PROBABLY result in it needing several thousand in machining to bring it back into spec. Maybe let sleeping dogs lie. You should buy Bruce Anderson and Wayne's books. They will answer all your questions. Recommended and available from our host. ![]()

Just make sure the snap lock is set for proper direction of travel, not installed backwards.

Thank you Trackrash and Flat6pac for your reply. It was almost 6k additional, so I decided not to open the case. Hopefully the clip will hold!
