SC Distributor Question
1982 variety. Which way does it rotate?
The Bentley manual (p. 280-2, top of page, in italics) states CW; Wayne's books says (p. 178) says CCW. So which is it? I would just turn the engine over and check but to do so I would have to remove the rear engine mount. Wear on the rotor tip would indicate to me this engine is a CW engine. SC's are CCW unless the gear on the crank is changed.

On flat ground and with the parking brake off, put the trans in 4th gear. Then at the rear bumper, push the car forward until the rotor spins.

Engine not in the car, so that’s not an option.
Distributor is Bosch P/N 0.237.303.003 which I think was originally for the 1978-1979 euro SC. No Vacuum advance. Perhaps Bentley is wrong here? |
Stock SC is CCW.

So I guess the Bentley book is incorrect.

Thank you Henry. I will get the inspection mirror and look for the arrow. I don’t think I ever noticed that before.

On the Bentley web site - they have a few corrections which should be printed and/or manually edited in your hard copy for the SC manual:
Cylinder Heads, Installing Distributor rotation - page 280-2 (P983) Wheel brearing cover plate tightening torque correction - page 420-20 (P983) https://wiki.bentleypublishers.com/display/tech/Porsche+911+SC+Service+Manual+-+1978-1983+%28P983%29+-+Updates |
In the first picture you’re on the wrong side, you want the rotor leading point approaching the
Firing mark. You need to pull the distributor and back the rotor one cog on the crank. Bruce |
Thanks.
That pic is after reading the Bentley; it was previously as you mentioned but I changed it. It is now put back. Buts thanks for pointing that out. |
