Valve springs replacement thoughts

Well another question from the dull tool in the shed (only one can be the sharpest :))

The Gentlemen doing my heads called and wanted to know if I should replace my valve springs. He thought the heads looked pretty good (amazed after 41 years). He rattled off measurements and he was amazed all the springs measured so close. Also, thought the guides looked pretty good too. I did not write down or capture his values on the springs as I thought I’d just toss in some OEM springs (OEM ~ 14 each cyl vs Porsche ~ 50).

From my local Porsche mechanic (been at it since 80’s) he said he had problems with non Porsche springs breaking (but this was a while back ... he thought) :o).

So: A.) use as is 115k miles (keep original)
B.) replace with OEM
C.) replace with genuine Porsche

We did have problems with outer valve springs breaking on the factory springs. IIRC, it was the 78-82 SC’s. Might be best to replace them.

I would keep the springs if they measure up to spec, unless you are doing something crazy to require better springs.

Note the responses from Neal Harvey - it would be very difficult to find a better source for information. This will help:

Early SC springs did have a problem - I am not sure if it was more than 78-79. You will need to search.
